5/6 CLASSROOM

Over the last three weeks, Gr 5/6 have been working hard to consolidate their knowledge.

In Religious Education, the Year 5/6 students have been learning about the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. We began by exploring the difference between a sign and a symbol, and last week, we read short Bible passages that connect to each sacrament. We will continue this exploration in class this week.

During English lessons, we finished our persuasive writing unit in Week 1 of this term - I hope you enjoyed reading a few examples in Week two's newsletter. During Weeks 2 and 3, we focused on narrative writing. Last week, we recapped words containing the grapheme (the written letters) for the /s/ and /si/ sounds, such as "treasure." For our listening and viewing part, we watched A Brief History of Astronomy, which the students enjoyed, listening attentively and respectfully making notes and drawing in their Cross Curriculum books.

In Mathematics, the focus has been on fractions, exploring key terms like numerator and denominator. The students have been learning about proper, improper, and equivalent fractions, as well as parts of a whole. They are also expanding their understanding of decimals and percentages. This week, the concept of mass is being introduced—not to be confused with church Mass—which refers to the amount of matter in an object; and it is measured in kilograms (kg) and stays constant, while weight varies with changes in gravity e.g. a person weighs less on the Moon but their mass is still the same.

The students are eagerly preparing for the school production on Tuesday, November 26th, and are currently engrossed in learning their scripts. Their enthusiasm is truly inspiring, and we can't wait to see their hard work come to life on stage.

As always, the students have been thoroughly enjoying the physical activities through My Future Academy (Bluearth) and are having a great time learning new games. It's wonderful to see them staying active and healthy.

Students are learning their scripts to prepare for the school production, which is on Tuesday, November 26th. Additionally, Week 5 (next week) is a short week with no homework.  I hope you all enjoy some family time.
