Our three 8 junior debating teams took on our first round on Wednesday the 16th of October against Donvale Christian College and Tintern Grammar School on the topic ‘That we should ban advertisements that target children.’
Our juniors participated in mock debates in the lead up to the big debut which required them to prepare their speeches and arguments, face off against their peers and receive feedback from Mr Connell and Ms Muhtaseb.
Their hard work paid off – as we saw two out of three teams take home a win! Congratulations to Kristy W (First speaker), Charlotte R (Second speaker), Boris E (Third speaker) and Mithra S (First speaker), Yulia T (Second speaker), and Sukriti V (Third speaker)!
A huge thank you to all other students that participated and attended to support their teams – it is so important to show up and be there to cheer each other on!
Following the win, the students were treated to a model debate on the topic that ‘AUSLAN should be compulsory in all primary schools’ performed by Debating Association of Victoria’s adjudicators. Students were able to be the judges for the performance and decide who won and provide feedback on their performance – and they definitely did not hold back! Most importantly, they were able to learn about the structure for each speaker’s speech, how to define a topic and introduce a model, and how to rebut against the opposition’s argument effectively.
We are so proud of everyone that participated this round and are so excited to continue to see your skills grow in the coming rounds. Keep up the good work!
Ms Muhtaseb and Mr Connell.
