On Monday the 21st of October 8 of our elite athletes took to the track and field in the State Track & Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium. The sun was beaming and the competition was heating up! All students should be incredibly proud of their achievements on the day.
A special shoutout to year 12 students Finn & Evie. Both of these incredibly talented athletes have led the sports program from the front quite literally over the years. They have been fantastic role models to all, and your presence will be missed! Finn, good luck with your future soccer endeavours. Evie, all the best with your football journey.

On Wednesday the 9th of October our mighty team of athletes competed at the picturesque Doncaster Athletics Track. It was a delightfully sunny day with a flurry of PBs and great results. Most importantly, every single athlete there turned up to their event and did the absolute best they could on the day. Participation combined with talent allowed for Team Vermont to once again be crowned EMR Track & Field Champions for the third year running. The title was shared with Brentwood as both schools were tied on 407 points each. Well done to all involved on this fantastic achievement.

Our girls headed off to Hawthorn with high hopes and a mission to beat Balwyn. Our other opponents on the day were Brentwood, Blackburn and Norwood, the latter whom we’d never played before.
Our first game was against Brentwood, and because they arrived late, we only played one half. We found ourselves attacking for most of the game, but their resolute defence restricted us to just a single goal, but still with a win.
We next had a bye and were able to scout our next two opponents, Norwood and Blackburn. We were impressed with the standard of both teams. They clearly had at least one player each who played club hockey, but those players were not dominating. There was a lot of passing and good defending from both sides.
When it was our turn to take on Norwood, they started with possession and scored straight away. Taking possession ourselves, we managed a quick reply. Most of the rest of the game was an arm-wrestle, but Norwood prevailed 1-2.
Our game against Blackburn started similarly, with the scores soon at 1-1. Prior to half time, we conceded a second goal, and knowing that we needed a win, we went all out attack in the second half, conceding a 3rd goal late in the piece from a quick counterattack by Blackburn.
Playing for pride, we went tooth-and-nail against Balwyn in our final game. Both the heat and fatigue had an impact on both teams, and although again we did most of the attacking, we were unable to score, and the game finished a 0-0 draw. But at least we didn’t lose to Balwyn!
Norwood won the day and progressed through to the State finals. Blackburn were worthy runners up. All teams were competitive on the day and sportsmanship was high. All players did their respective schools proud.
Well done to our intermediate boys at regionals last week! They won a nail biter against Lilydale 33-31, with Tom D scoring two points from a free throw with only four seconds to go. Templestowe turned out to be our toughest components, we lost in the first round against them, and they went on to win regionals. The boys gave it their all against Camberwell High School, however they proved a bit too tough to beat. Overall, the day was enjoyable, and everyone worked well as a team. Big shout out to Harrison R, who was exceptional and Archie D who continued to play on despite an ankle injury. Go team!
Congratulations to the year 7 table tennis team who came runners up at the EMR Championships. A fantastic effort to all involved. Special thanks to super coach Josh Chia and expert assistant Mr Gillespie. One better next year!
On the 27th of August, the Year 7 Girls’ hockey team travelled to Hawthorn Malvern Hockey Centre to play in the Waverley Division competition. All the girls played extremely well on the day and it paid off, with our team advancing through to Regional Finals. The results on the day were:
Round 1 vs Mt Waverley: Win 2-0
Round 2 vs Highvale: Win 1-0
Round 3 vs Glen Waverley: Draw 0-0
Our goal scorers were Emma M, Kate R and Emily A.
Overall, the team did so well and we are very proud of them. A big thank you to Mr. Coles and Ms. Swain for taking the time to coach us and take us there. Without you, we couldn’t have advanced through to Regionals.

EMR Intermediate Boys/Mixed Cricket
A team of 15 players represented Vermont in Regional Cricket. Our first match was against Heathmont College. We won the toss and elected to bowl first, which was a great decision by Captain Hamish K. The first over was bowled by Rudra P and this got us off to a great start as he took an amazing wicket on his 3rd ball, as the overs ticked by Heathmont's wickets were tumbling one by one until we got them all out for around 64 runs, this was an easy score to beat but we still kept our guard up as openers Ansh S and Rudra P went out to bat and scored 32 runs in the first 3 overs and we won comfortably.
Our next match was against Lilydale and once again we won the toss and elected to bowl first. The first over was again bowled by Rudra P but the openers were too good and ended up hitting 12 runs off the first over, as the overs went by Lilydale's runs just kept on going up until we had a total of 112 runs to chase in 14 overs. Same openers from last match, Ansh and Rudra came out to bat, but in the first over disaster struck, Ansh got caught out on one run, with Lilydale getting an early wicket with their confidence boosted but we didn't let that stop us, Captain Hamish came out to bat next and he made a solid 9 runs but got out to a good ball. One by one Vermont's wickets kept on going down, but Rudra stuck in till the end trying to score the runs with the help of his teammates, but Vermont fell short, making 86 runs in the end and Rudra P made 43 Runs Not Out, hitting two sixes in the last two balls of the match.
Our thanks to our coach Darren Davies and Mr Duiveman for taking us.
