This year we have two teams entered in the FIRST Lego League Challenge. ABSeas and AQUANERDS have worked extremely well over this semester to prepare for this challenge. They have not only collaborated with members of their team and members of the other team but with Year 7, 8 and 11 students from Willetton SHS and Corpus Christie, Leeming HS and Curtin University students as part of the Curtin Outreach program.
The FIRST Lego League Challenge program inspires young people to experiment and grow their confidence, critical, thinking, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning.
This year's FIRST LEGO League challenge is called SUBMERGED. Teams must dive in deep to problems faced by people who use the water. ABSeas aim to develop a sunscreen that doesn’t cause coral bleaching but also keeps sharks away from surfers. Aquanerds have investigated the problems caused by algal bloom in our waterways and how they can prevent the problems. All FIRST® programs are built on a foundation of Core Values, celebrating discovery, impact, inclusion, innovation, teamwork, and fun.
Our two teams took part in the Fremantle Regional Challenge at John Curtin College of the Arts on Saturday 12th October. The Fremantle Regional Finals were amazing!
Both of our teams performed extremely well. It was great to see the team collaboration and cooperation demonstrated throughout the day. The judges were very impressed with team innovations, robot designs, coding, Coopertition ® and Gracious Professionalism® displayed by both teams.
Aquanerds were awarded with 1st Place for both Robot Performance and Innovation Project. ABSeas were awarded Champion School for the Fremantle Regional Competition.
Both Aquanerds and ABSeas now will be part of the Nationals West competition on Saturday 7th December at Curtin University. The students are continuing to improve their designs and innovations each Wednesday and Thursday afternoon after school and many lunch times. We wish them the best of luck for their upcoming challenge.
