The Power of Productive Struggle in Learning

When children face challenges in their learning, it’s natural for adults to want to jump in and help. However, letting children experience “productive struggle” where they have time to think, make mistakes, and work things out for themselves is one of the most powerful ways to build confidence and resilience. In numeracy, productive struggle teaches children to reason, look for patterns, and develop problem-solving skills that go beyond just finding the right answer.

When students realise that learning can be hard and that’s okay, they begin to see mistakes as opportunities, not failures. Over time, they build persistence, independence, and a genuine love of learning.

Here are some great ways you can boost your child's confidence in maths at home:

Cooking Together: Ask your child to measure ingredients or double/halve a recipe.

  • Make it easier: Use cups or spoons already marked.
  • Make it harder: Ask them to work out how much is needed for 1½ batches.

Shopping & Money: Let them count coins, estimate costs, or work out change.

  • Make it easier: Use small amounts like $2 or $5.
  • Make it harder: Add a discount or ask them to estimate total cost before paying. Estimate the total cost at the shops and compare to the receipt.
