LAUDATO SI’ SCHOOLS DAY

Last Friday, John Paul II Catholic School hosted a Laudato Si’ Day that was attended by over 100 students and 25 teachers from 12 Catholic Schools. Laudato Si’ was a letter written by Pope Francis in 2015 encouraging everyone on the planet to “Care For Our Common Home” - our planet Earth.

The day commenced with First Nations educator, Trish Hodge, welcoming us to Country, and then conducting an Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony. She then shared stories about Aboriginal history, culture and caring for country.

Students and teachers then shared many of the projects happening in their schools around Tasmania. These projects represented sustainability and environmental projects that encouraged their students to look after our planet.

Our new Archbishop, Anthony Ireland also attended part of the event and watched the school presentations with interest. After lunch, our school teachers and students led tours around our school gardens and talked about how the veggies that we grow are used in our school lunch program.

Special thanks to our school principal, Mr Morgan for agreeing to host this event. We were also very grateful for all the staff, students and volunteers who helped make this event such a big success.

GROWING TOMATOES

This term we have been growing tomatoes from seed and they are already growing into seedlings. This week we planted the seedlings into pots ready for planting in our school gardens in Term 4.

GARDEN MAINTENANCE

Thanks to all the students who have been helping look after our school veggie gardens and fruit orchards. We have been digging, adding manure, mulching and watering. Hopefully this will lead to lots of healthy plants and fruit growing at our school.

GRADE 6 SUSTAINABILITY LEADERS

Special thanks to Nash, Dominik, Ruby and Kasen from Grade 6 who have been looking after our Soft Plastics program this term. We have collected lots of soft plastics from all our classes and taken it to the Glebe Hill Collection Centre.

Best wishes for a great holiday break.
