Advent

As we move into this beautiful season of Advent, our school community is invited to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. Advent marks the beginning of the Church’s liturgical year and spans the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Day. The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning coming or arrival, reminding us that this is a time of waiting, hope, and joyful expectation.

What is Advent?

Advent is a time when Catholics prepare in three ways:

  • Remembering Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago.
  • Recognising Christ’s presence with us now in our daily lives—in prayer, in community, and through acts of love.
  • Looking forward to the future coming of Christ, when peace and justice will be fulfilled in God’s kingdom.

During these weeks, the Church calls us to pause, reflect, and make room for Jesus in our hearts and homes.

Why Do Catholics Celebrate Advent?

Advent helps us slow down in a busy world and focus on what truly matters. It is a season of:

  • Hope – trusting in God’s promises
  • Peace – seeking calm and reconciliation
  • Joy – celebrating God’s goodness
  • Love – sharing God’s compassion with others

The Advent wreath is a key symbol during this season. Each Sunday, a new candle is lit to mark our journey toward Christmas:

  • Week 1 – Hope (Purple)
  • Week 2 – Peace (Purple)
  • Week 3 – Joy (Rose)
  • Week 4 – Love (Purple)

The growing light of the candles reminds us that Christ, the Light of the World, is coming.

Scripture Reflection

Advent invites us to listen deeply to God’s word. A scripture often shared during this season is:

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” — Isaiah 9:2

This prophecy reminds us that Jesus is the light who brings hope to our world.Another beautiful Advent message comes from the Gospel of Luke:

“Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” — Luke 3:4

These words encourage us to reflect, pray, and act with kindness as we prepare our hearts for Jesus.

Caritas Just Leadership Day

A group of our Grade 5 students recently attended the Caritas Just Leadership Day, where they joined other young leaders to explore what it means to lead with compassion and justice. They took part in activities and discussions about global issues and how small actions can make a big difference.

Our students represented St Patrick’s with maturity and enthusiasm, engaging thoughtfully and showing a genuine interest in how they can contribute to social justice within our school community. We look forward to seeing how they continue to grow as leaders.
