🌱 LITERACY - READING

This week, our Grade 5 and 6 students will be exploring the power of podcasts as a form of communication. They will listen carefully to a range of podcasts with different purposes and audiences — from storytelling and interviews to news reports and educational discussions.

After listening, they will analyse each podcast using a cross-class comparison chart that examines key elements such as:

  • Purpose – Why was the podcast created? What message or idea is the creator trying to share?
  • Audience – Who is the podcast intended for, and how does that influence the style and content?
  • Format – How is the podcast structured (e.g. introduction, interview, summary, music)?
  • Tone – What mood or feeling does the speaker convey through their voice and delivery?
  • Content – What information, opinions or stories are shared?
  • Engagement Rating – How effectively does the podcast capture and hold the listener’s attention?

Students will use these categories to compare findings, sparking rich discussions about what makes an engaging and effective podcast. This learning will help them deepen their understanding of text purpose and audience — and will also guide them as they begin creating their own podcasts later this term!

What you can do at home:

You can support your child’s learning by listening to podcasts together at home. Choose topics that match their interests — such as sport, science, storytelling, or current events — and chat about what you both notice. Encourage your child to think about who the podcast is for, why it was made, and how the speaker keeps listeners engaged. These conversations help strengthen their comprehension, critical thinking, and media literacy skills in a fun, real-world way.

🌱 LITERACY - WRITING

As we continue our focus on speech writing and presenting, our Grade 5 students will begin crafting speeches for the leadership positions they aspire to hold in 2026. They will draw on everything they have learned so far about what makes an effective and engaging speech. Meanwhile, our Grade 6 students will commence writing their graduation speeches and reflections for their yearbooks, celebrating their final year of primary school and the journey they’ve shared together.

What you can do at home:

Encourage your child to practise their speech aloud and focus on clear, confident delivery. Offer gentle feedback on pace and expression, and celebrate their effort. Watching short speeches or presentations together can also inspire great ideas and boost confidence.

🌱 NUMERACY

This week, our Grade 5 and 6 students will focus on Financial Mathematics, exploring real-world applications of money. They will investigate earning, spending, saving, and budgeting, while solving practical problems involving discounts, profit, and value for money. These lessons help students build important numeracy skills and develop financial awareness that supports everyday decision-making.

What you can do at home:

Give your child real-life opportunities to work with money — such as comparing prices at the supermarket, calculating discounts, or planning a small budget for a family meal or outing.

🌱 CBL

Whilst we continue to learn how computers use binary code to communicate and make decisions, students will brainstorm the apps they and their families use regularly, discussing how these technologies make everyday life easier. They’ll also consider the ethical side of app design, reflecting on popular apps such as Shein, Temu, Snapchat, and TikTok, and suggesting ways developers could make these platforms safer and more responsible.

Essential Question:

How can we use coding to solve problems and create solutions in our world?

Guiding Questions:

  • Where do we see coding in everyday life?
  • What is an algorithm and how do coders use them?
  • What problems do we face at school or in our community that coding might help with?
  • How can we share our coding project with others to make a positive impact?

Challenge:

Design an app prototype that solves a problem or improves an experience in our school community.

🌱 HOMEWORK

Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of

- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice

- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign

- 2 Nessy activities

This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.

BUDDY BAGS - Grade 5 students should now only have one task left to complete for their Buddy Bags, which are gifted to their 2026 Prep Buddies. This is the 'Nameplate' task that will be completed in school, once we know our buddy's name. Please check in with your child to see which tasks they may still need support in completing.

MEMORY BOOKS - Grade 6 students will continue to work on their Memory Book to reflect on their experiences at Wonga Park Primary School. This information has been communicated to parents via email, and is available for students on Showbie.

🌿 REMINDERS

🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged.
