Auslan Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Term 4, Auslan! In Week 1, Grade Preps and 3-6 students will do revision. During Week 2, Grade Preps will learn about People and Grade 1-6 students will learn signs for Food. During the revision lessons, students will revise and practise signs learned in Term 3.

When Grade Prep students learn about People, they will learn to sign the ‘People’ poem. The learning activity will consist of playing a four corners game where in various corners of the room there will be a picture of a man, lady, girl and boy.

The teacher will give the sign and the students have to move to stand near that picture to show their understanding. Grade Preps will learn to sign the following Auslan words when learning about People including the handshapes needed:

  • People (pointer handshape)
  • person,
  • man (fist)
  • lady /women (bent flat)
  • boy (pointer)
  • girl (pointer - different location - different movement)
  • children
  • yours
  • mine
  • he
  • she
  • they.

When learning about Food (junk food), Grade 1/2 students will do an activity that will involve practicing the signs together including forming sentences to express their preferred takeaway foods. The sentence stem that will support and guide students will include “ I like… My favourite …” Grade 3/4 students will do a similar activity but will go further deeper into expressing what they like and do not like and include signs previously learnt like bacon, lettuce, etc…. Grade 5/6 students will practise the signs together and participate in a Small Group Auslan Chat including bringing back to the class information that students found out in the Auslan 'chat’. Grade 5/6 students will share information they learnt about their peers’ most liked/disliked takeaway foods. The following signs will be learnt in the Food lesson:
