Spotlight on Learning

STEM -  Spotlight on Learning

This term in the STEM lab we have seen a lot of hands on learning.  Students in Year 1-4 are all involved in design and building projects.

The Year 1 students are working with Strawbees Kits.  These are straws and connectors.  The students look at shapes and how to connect these and what can be used in conjunction with these shapes.

The students in Year 2 are looking at playground equipment.  They have looked at our current playground and have come up with some spectacular ideas (look at for ball pits, sushi shops and water parks!) and are now designing a piece of playground equipment that could be built (realistically) in our area.  Once their design is complete they will build a small replica of the piece of equipment using a variety of materials and tools.

The Year 3 students are using the Lego We.Do kits to build a variety of models that perform various tasks.  They then code these models/robots to perform certain functions ie a motion sensor.

Year 4 students are also using Lego to build Push/Pull Machines.  They test these machines to ensure they function as they should and then look at what forces and levers it uses.

Prep students have been busy on the Chromebooks working on their google doc skills.  Last week they were able to write a sentence about their learnings in STEM this year along with a heading to their doc and inserted two images that related to their learnings.

Year 5 students are super excited to be writing and recording their podcast.  The students have chosen their topics and are researching and developing a script and are starting to record their podcast using the platform Soundtrap.  Some of these podcasts may even make their way to Spotify!

Year 6 students are deep into a gaming unit.  They have analysed some platformer games and are now developong a storyboard and pseudo code for their own simple game.  From there they will use either Microsoft Make Code or gDevelop to build their game.  BUT the big ticket for the Year 6's is in the final weeks of term where they will be using drones out on the oval.
