7 - 9 Learning Community

Fiona Wallace - Learning Community Leader Years 7 - 9

September saw the first of a series of supportive education sessions for parents and carers with a visit from Jayden Howe from Headspace Echuca.  Parents and carers who attended were given an overview of the sorts of services that Headspace Echuca can provide, the help they can offer, and an overview of ‘eheadspace’ which is available for young people to use online. Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing mental health services for 12-25 year olds and they provide support across four key areas: Those being mental health, work school and study, alcohol and other drugs and physical and sexual health.  Following Jayden’s presentation there was time for attendees to ask questions and select resources to take home.

In October, we have organised a parent/carer session focused on providing support and information about navigating both the good and bad of using ‘social media’.  Leading Senior Constable Shane Roberts, Campaspe’s Youth Specialist Officer, provided information about how best to support our young people, the dangers of using social media, and how best to take positive action when young people are misusing social media or being adversely affected by it.  Unfortunately, this is a topic that can negatively affect young people.  It is essential that we are all armed with strategies and tips in order to combat the disadvantages of social media.

In November, we have arranged for Echuca Health to present an information session specifically aimed at parents and carers on the topic of vaping.  We are waiting for a venue to be confirmed, so please keep your eyes on Compass and our socials for more information about further details.

It is our aim to continue to bring experts into our school to provide information and support to our families and our line-up for 2024 presentations is currently being arranged. The sessions are set to be held on Wednesdays from 5-6pm. These sessions are open to families of all ages.  If you have any particular services or experts that you would like us to organise, please let the school know as we will do our best to source that support for you. It is imperative that we work together and these sessions are designed to ensure that we learn together how best to ensure your child’s success.

Pictured are Mr James Tan and Year 9 Coordinator Mr Lawrie Macdonald with six of the eight Year 9 students who are leaving this weekend to begin their term at the School for Student Leadership at the Alpine School Campus.  They are excited and a bit nervous, but very much looking forward to this opportunity of a lifetime.  We look forward to following their journey and then hearing about their community project at the end of the year when they return.
