The Fathering Project News

Teaching and embodying a growth mindset for your children can make all the difference in how they perceive life – as a glass half-full rather than half-empty. It empowers them to persevere - to understand that, with time and commitment, they can achieve and conquer the things they aspire to. We all have beliefs about our own abilities and potential. These are part of our mindset, which is a powerful tool that shapes our everyday lives.

Try modelling to your children what a growth mindset looks like. It helps them to have a positive outlook on life, as well as in their own abilities to achieve what they set their mind to.

Top Tips

  1. Listen to what your kids say. Think about the messages you are sending about mindsets. For example: If they said “I can’t do this”, you could encourage a change in mindset by saying “you can’t do this yet but you are learning to do this”.
  2. We are always learning. Our brains are always learning (even as adults). Tell your child about something that you have learnt or are learning now.
  3. Practice makes perfect. Explain that when you practise things it helps your brain to remember, so the next time you try the task is a bit easier.
