Class 5/6 Steiner

Celebrating Learning

I’ll give you 2 Horses for One Gold

Students have returned from holidays to begin a swift journey into the world of business maths calculating percentages, fractions and discussing capital loans.

We have run mock economies with the joy of bartering pictures of horses for pictures of gold, and then the experience of having a sovereign state in which the local duke will pay us penance for our goods (still pictures of horses and gold).

As we move towards week 3 and the end of this unit students are building loan applications for non-existing businesses and calculating profit and losses on everyday items. Clearly gearing up to purchase or make retail wishes for the end of year summer holidays.

Following this learning we will move back to history looking at Ancient Greece.

Thoughts from the students about the business maths we have completed so far:

Daisy says “It was really fun and I want to do it again, and I really like how you could sell things and buy things in the game.

Pippa says “So what I found really fun and interesting was that we had fake items and fake money and Eddie made it so that we could sell and buy them. However he did it twice with the second game having profit and loss involved.

A dialogue between Eddie and Ava
Eddie:Ava…”
Ava:It was cool.
Eddie:Yeah... Did you enjoy it?
Ava:eh?
Eddie:What made it cool?
Ava:I dunno?
Eddie:Like, it was interesting you mean?
Ava:Yeah
Eddie:Ok, thanks Ava
