Captains Corner

By Dilu 6A

Hello everyone, and welcome to another amazing newsletter at GWPS! As we approach the end of Term Three, we can all see, it has been quite the year, and quite the journey. Learning opportunities, productive struggles, Production, camps etc. By the looks of it, it has been a successful term, which will lead into a fantastic Term 4!

As you might now, we are entering an exciting new phase of the year. Selecting our future 2024 school leaders! The Year 5’s will be taking part in an exhilarating selection process, writing applications, taking interviews and writing speeches. I, myself, would like to give my opinion of what it’s like to be a school captain of GWPS.

It’s an excellent opportunity for students to work on their speaking skills and take a peek into a career where you will be a leader. We take part in school activities, like hosting school assemblies, taking visitors on school tours every Tuesday mornings. We also actively participate in CIS meetings, as we are CIS school. Giving information on Prep Transitions, and more.

With this role, also comes responsibility. It’s like the old spider-man saying, ‘With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility’. It is our duty to remember meetings, be on time for tours. We also must be aware; we are the role models. Students look up to us, so we must be role models. But, overall, being a captain is an amazing part of Year Six. Good luck to all the Year 5’s.

On Saturday the 9th of September, 48 of our students participated in an immersive, exciting show. The VSSS (Victorian State School Spectacular) was an engaging experience that was enjoyed through the Mass Choir (Year 3’s and 4’s), Mass Dance (Year 5’s and 6’s) and the respectful audience! Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s show. It surely was spectacular!

On Friday, a few of our Year 6 students took part in the Syndal District Basketball Round Robin. They worked up a sweat, shooting, passing and scoring. They played against over 10 schools, the girls team placing 5th, and the boys placing 7th. It was a great experience for the Year 6’s to get involved in, working on their teamwork and basketball skills. Well done to them!

Looking ahead, we have many things to be excited for. Our holidays, of course. We have our school’s annual Twilight Sports. Unfortunately, at the start of the year, we were unable to host the games, but thankfully, we were able to postpone it to the first week of Term 4. As well as that, we have our Year 4-6’s Divisional Athletics on the 5th of October. Our talented athletes will be testing their skills, as they have progressed to the third round of the athletics tournament. Good luck to all of the students who are participating in these events.

Well, it has been an action-packed, productive term at Glen Waverley. So much to learn and achieve. I can’t wait for what’s around the corner!

Thank you for reading.
