Opportunity 1: DeadlyScience
On Tuesday 22nd August, several deadly students from Years 9-12 had the opportunity to attend a Deadly Pathways Program at Yarra Ranges Tech School. During this excursion, Ryekan J., Sam S., Marrum H. and Warragul H. were able to explore potential future career pathways such as Engineering, Project Managers, Specialists and Designers. Students were exposed to how Laing O’Rouke utilised virtual reality, laser cutting, 3-D printing and 3-D scanners during the removal of level crossings on the Lilydale train line. The afternoon consisted of a Yarning Circle facilitated by DeadlyScience, who we are so very appreciative of.
Opportunity 2: Yarning Circle
First Nations students Mason J., Rory O., Ella B., Augie C., Ryekan J. and Sam S. attended a Yarning Circle on Monday 11th September. This was facilitated by our Koorie Engagement Support Officer, Thomas Harrison. During this time, we discussed ways to embed our culture into our school community, alongside a variety of other topics. We already look forward to our next Yarning Circle, which is towards the end of Term 4.
Referendum
The Voice to Parliament Referendum (the Referendum) was a significant event in Australia’s political history. On 14th October, Australia voted No to A Voice to Parliament. This was an opportunity to: embed a Voice in the Constitution, recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia’s history and provide Indigenous communities abilities to inform policy and legal decisions that impact their lives. We understand that this has been a challenging, overwhelming and anxiety filled time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. If this raises anything for you, please know there is support available:
What’s ahead for First Nations people? We will continue to show survival and resistance by standing in solidarity.
