SAKG NEWS

We have started off Term 4 with a Pasta Party in the kitchen, making egg pasta dough and hand rolling fettuccine. There is something special about the whole experience: the magical transformation of the tough flaky dough into a smooth springy ball, the secondary transformation of the springy dough into the smooth silky sheets that gradually come out of the pasta roller, and the final appearance of perfectly chopped fettuccine strands. Of course it tastes amazing and topped with a freshly cooked tomato and seasonal greens Napoli sauce it has been amazing. Suffice it to say that leftovers have been non-existent and requests for more have abounded!

For dessert we have brought back a good old simple favourite, pear and apple custard with whipped cream. Pears are in season at the moment so are at their sweetest crunchiest best. It is an opportunity for our kids to hone and improve on their peeling and chopping skills. A simple but enduring favourite and the kitchen smells wonderful.

In the garden we are talking about organic waste during this rotation. We will be identifying organic waste in our Kitchen Garden as a way to introduce the new organic recycling system. There are 6 new buckets for eggshells, banana peels, wet waste, dry waste, guinea pig food and worm food. Each bucket goes to the right place in the garden so that waste is recycled in the best way possible! For example, banana peels go into a large bin to make banana peel tea that then is used as a fertiliser for the vegetables to make them grow well.

We then head out to the garden to do our daily tasks. The animal group is looking after the chickens and guinea pigs by feeding, watering, cleaning and collecting eggs. The harvest group is harvesting leafy greens, herbs and snow peas for cooking in the kitchen. The grow group is taking old crops out of the garden and planting new ones such as everlastings, marigolds, lettuce and silverbeet. The observe and create group are being roving reporters to document our amazing garden. They are also sifting a huge pile of dirt and putting it into large tyres in the chicken coop so that the chickens can have dust baths!

On a final note the SAKG team would like to thank all of those families who put their hand up to host our guinea pigs over the holiday break.  We know they would have appreciated the love, cuddles and attention.
