Professional Learning Community 1 (Grade 1)

What an exciting start to Term 4 we have had here in PLC 1. Welcoming new students into Delacombe and having our current students return with bright, enthusiastic and smiley faces has been fabulous. We have such an exciting Term ahead of us which includes our week-long swimming program at Shayne Reece's, our Grade 1 excursion, Colour Run, Assessment Weeks, Writers' Festival and of course all things Christmas later on in the Term.

The students have been working very hard on their Writers' Festival writing pieces and they cannot wait to show you all what incredible work they have done. Keep checking our social media pages (Instagram and Facebook) for regular sneak peaks and updates.

As the weather gets warmer please don’t forget to bring your hats in if you have not yet already and if you wish to purchase one please contact the front office. We provide students with sunscreen if they wish to use it however, if you wish to send you kids to school with sunscreen on already that is encouraged.

We look forward to seeing you all around the school soon.

Professional Learning Community 2 (Grade 2)

Hello Grade 2 families,

We hope this newsletter finds you well. In Grade 2, we've been diving into the exciting world of summarizing during our reading sessions. To further enhance your child's summarizing skills, we encourage you to ask them questions about the books they're reading at home. This practice will help them become even better at capturing the essence of a story in just a few sentences.

Writers' Fest sizzling along!

Our young authors have been hard at work crafting their pieces for Writers' Fest. This year's theme revolves around an Aussie BBQ, so if you have some snags (sausages) at home, why not throw them on the barbie and make it a family writing experience? It's a fantastic opportunity for students to explore their creativity and storytelling skills.

Numeracy Focus - Exploring Shapes

In numeracy, we're diving into the world of shapes! Our focus is on 2D and 3D shapes. Encourage your child to spot shapes in their everyday surroundings. Maybe they can find rectangles on the TV or cylinders in cans. It's a fun way to apply their math knowledge.

Upcoming Reminders:

1. Sleepover on Thursday, October 19th: Please mark your calendars for this exciting event. More details and permission slips have been sent home.

2. Writers' Fest in Week 4: Our Writer's Fest is just around the corner. Be sure to support your child in their creative writing endeavours as they prepare to showcase their talents.

Thank you for your continued support in your child's education. We look forward to seeing their progress in summarizing, creative writing, and shape recognition as the term continues. If you have any questions or need further information, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Warm regards,

Grade 2 Teachers

Professional Learning Community 3 (Grade 3)

Welcome back to what is already shaping up to be an exciting and busy term!

We began the term with a fun-filled excursion to Earth Ed in Mount Clear where we learnt lots about the world around us – electricity, gravity and lots more. We even got to control some robots and have a brick collecting battle!

In Literacy we are transporting our readers to the dazzling Daintree rainforest in Queensland, working hard to create some magnificent and engaging writing pieces to display at the Writers' Festival in week 4. We can’t wait to show you all our hard work!

We have been taking on some challenging tasks in Numeracy this week – working hard during ‘sweaty brain time’ and discussing our strategies and thinking with others.

A reminder that hats are required in Term 4 - please make sure they are named! If your child has not yet returned their portfolio to their classroom teacher could this please be done as soon as possible to ensure all their fabulous work can be displayed.

Professional Learning Community 4 (Grade 4)

We hope you all had a relaxing holiday and ready for an exciting, fun-filled, busy Term 4! We began last week with our annual swimming program at Shayne Reece's. Students had a wow of a time shooting through the water like a torpedo and kicking their feet like they had fins.

In our Reading, students are analysing fiction texts by identifying how the author engages the reader by including descriptive language and providing many features to add interest such as suspense and mood. We are closely analysing the written/print and digital text of Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile – focusing on character emotions and how this changes over time.

As the Writers' Festival is in a few weeks, students are using all of their brilliant ideas, figurative language and sentence starters to write an amazing piece of a Deadly Dangerous Down Under Animal (crocodile, dingo, cassowary, spiders, snakes). Each day students write a paragraph which culminates in a description, ready for publishing. Students are feeling over the moon as they can’t wait for parents to see their finished piece.

In Numeracy, students will be learning all about multiplication strategies. Students will be using their problem-solving skills to work through real life worded problems – ask students about how big is Grandma’s rug? What happened when it did not fit in the space provided? How big would a rug be to fit in your lounge room or bedroom at home? How did you work it out?

Enjoy the rest of Week 2,

PLC4 Teachers

Professional Learning Community 5 (Grade 5)

G’day mate, PLC 5 would like to welcome everyone back to school and wish you all a great start to Term 4.

We have hit the ground running this term, with Writers' Festival preparations in full swing. Students began by brainstorming all of the things that make Australia unique and maybe a little bit wacky sometimes; from here, students grouped their ideas into 3 main arguments. We have been reading a variety of texts to build our knowledge of all things Australia, whilst paying careful attention to the key message and useful facts within the texts. In Writing Students have had the first week to plan their piece and begin developing noun group phrases, and playing around with developing simple, compound and complex sentences that could be included in their writing. This week the students are beginning their drafts and I for one am very excited to hear what students come up with! The fun doesn’t stop there as students experiment with the use of Aussie slang and have also been using a few extra minutes throughout the week to begin creating decorations for our halls – Crickey, these creatures sure are something!

In Numeracy, students have been tackling quite a few open ended tasks where they are challenged to first think independently about the task (sweaty brain time) and then given the opportunity to work with one another and bounce ideas off of each other. Over this period work is spotlighted to the class focusing on the use of efficient strategies, from hands on materials to tables or grids to organise their thinking. Students have had multiple days to focus on the one concept and build upon their knowledge and strategies over this time. Already I have seen students becoming more determined and demonstrating greater persistence! Keep up the persistence and positive thinking Grade 5s!

Professional Learning Community 6 (Grade 6)

Reading: In Week 2 of Term 4, our students are delving into the fascinating world of synthesizing information from factual texts. This week's reading focus is all about honing critical skills for understanding and connecting information from various sources. Students are exploring non-fiction materials, learning to extract key details, and uncovering the bigger picture. This skill is crucial not only for academic success but also for being well-informed citizens. As students continue to develop their analytical abilities, they become better equipped to navigate the wealth of information in our world.

Writing: Our young authors are preparing to unleash their creativity as they gear up for our upcoming school Writers' Festival. This week, students are engrossed in writing descriptions of natural disasters. They are challenged to use all figurative strategies to create vivid, engaging descriptive narratives. Whether it's a raging bushfire, or a deluge of flood water, students are learning how to paint a compelling and emotional picture with words. This exercise goes beyond language skills; it encourages our writers to communicate their perspectives on these awe-inspiring natural phenomena. We're excited to see their talent shine during our upcoming festival!

Numeracy: In the world of Numeracy, our students are having a sweet time quantifying confectionary this week! They are exploring the world of mathematics through the lens of everyone's favourite treats. Students are focusing on identifying how to represent chance using fractions, decimals, and percentages. This real-world approach to numeracy not only makes math more relatable but also helps students see how mathematics is all around us.

Reminders: Don't forget to ensure that your child has their school hat at school each day, Sun safety is a top priority, and we appreciate your support in keeping our students safe and comfortable. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and involvement in your child's education.
