SECONDARY (7-12)

Reminder: Leave Pass Protocol

Parents/carers are reminded there is a very important process to follow if your student must leave the college at any time throughout school hours. Please ensure you follow these steps:

Parents/carers MUST provide a note to the front office, at the start of the school day, stating the following:

- Student Name

- Date of leave required

- The time the student must present to reception to take their leave

- If they will return to the college the same day, and if so what time they will return

- The reason for the leave being requested

- The parent/carerโ€™s name and signature

Please note, students will only be permitted to be collected by their parent/carer unexpectedly and without a note if it is an emergency.

Throwback Thursday!

Our Year 12 students took a trip down memory lane on Thursday, dressing up as their younger selves, complete with adorable childhood photos pinned to their outfits!

To add to the nostalgia, they shared a special class lunch where everyone brought along their favourite childhood snacks to enjoy together.

With the final days of high school fast approaching, itโ€™s heartwarming to see our Year 12s making the most of these moments; celebrating friendship, fun, and how far theyโ€™ve come.ย

Literary Superstar!

A huge congratulations to Year 7 student Leibron who recently received a commendation award for making it to the top 10 in the Youth Short Story Writing Competition as part of the Furphy Literary Award!

Year 8, 9 & 10 students from St Annes' College attended at Notre Dame College last week for the GV Youth Sustainability Conference.

ย

There they engaged in meaningful collaboration, problem-solving, and discussions on the pressures of climate change, it's impact on Youth, and proactive measures that can be taken to reduce and mitigate its effects.

๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ refers to long-terms shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. While these changes can occur naturally, human activities (especially the burning of fossil fuels) have been the main driver. This has led to an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, trapping heat and causing the Earth's temperature to rise, causing more frequent and intense heatwaves, droughts, storms, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and more.

ย

A Youth Sustainability Conference can help by:

- Educating and Empowering Young People

- Inspiring Action and Innovation

- Building Leadership and Advocacy Skills

- Connecting Like-Minded Peers

- Creating Ripple Effects

ย

This helps build knowledge, confidence and builds connections to lead a more sustainable future to take real steps in the fight against climate change.

ย

Great job to all students who took part. Your enthusiasm, leadership and commitment to creating a better future is truly inspiring. Well done for being voices of action and hope, we canโ€™t wait to see how you continue to lead the way in sustainability!

OED Grampians Camp

Our Outdoor Ed students spent last week soaking up the beauty of the Grampians while on camp. The students spent the week taking part in a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, soil and water quality monitoring, camping and cooking their own meals on a camp stove. Despite the chilly weather, the students thoroughly enjoyed their time on camp!

Yr 12 Physical Education

In Year 12 P.E during Unit 4 we are studying 'Training To Improve Performance'.ย  Topics covered during this Unit are Fitness Components, Training Principles, Activity Analysis & Training Methods.ย In Week 1 we participated in a Resistance/Weight training session in the Aquamoves Gym.ย After each class students fill in a reflective folio that will be used in an upcoming assessment task.ย Students really enjoyed using all the different pieces of equipment with the guidance of instructor Scotty.

Unit 4 Legal Studies

Our Unit 4 Legal Studies class yesterday was fortunate to welcome Sam Birrell MP Federal Member for Nicholls representing the National Party.

Sam provided an engaging and insightful session on the workings of the Australian Parliament, including the roles of the House of Representatives, how laws are made, and the influence of the Constitution, legislation, and conventions. Students asked thoughtful questions as he used both historical and current examples to explain complex political concepts.

Topics covered included shadow ministries, Australian democracy, preferential voting, coalition governments, the role of senators, how to become one, referendums and plebiscites, the committee system, and international agreements such as free trade and foreign aid.

Sam also shared his personal journey from life after school to becoming a Member of Parliament. A highlight for many students was his entertaining description of โ€œa day in the lifeโ€ of a parliamentarian, especially enjoying learning about the sports teams they play in before sitting in Parliament. (Yes, they did ask whether the Prime Minister plays soccer!)

We thank Sam Birrell for his generosity, openness, and time. Our students walked away with a stronger understanding of the political process, and perhaps a few were inspired to one day walk the halls of Parliament themselves.
