What's Happening in the Senior School

Year 5

What’s Happening in Year 5 in Weeks 3 and 4

Last Friday, the students met with their Year 1 Reading Buddy, and we began our reading program that will occur weekly. This was really nice for the Year 5 students to act as role models for the younger students, everyone enjoyed making new connections.

Students will also continue their leadership workshops with the Year 1s and will engage with other year levels as well.

Our students participated in the House Athletics Carnival on Monday of Week 2 which was a great success. The students had a ball, and everyone had a go at all the different track and field activities. Congratulations to all of those who have made the district athletics team!

Wellbeing

Students will learn how to recognise emotions and engage in positive self-talk through Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons.

Literacy

The students will continue the novel study for Dirrarn, the sequel to Black Cockatoo. The novel study will guide the Literacy unit in both reading and writing for the first three weeks. Students will continue to focus on sentence level writing structures and will learn how to write a factual recount of Jandamarra, First Nations hero of the Kimberly. We will continue the Word Origins spelling lessons. The students are enjoying finding out the meaning of new morphemes each week.

Maths

In Maths we will be concluding our fractions unit. We will be focusing on representing fractions with related denominators on parallel number lines, finding and identifying equivalent fractions by simplifying and comparing and ordering fractions with related denominators. We will then be introducing decimals as our next unit of work.

Knowledge Unit

Geography is the focus for this term’s Knowledge Unit. In this fortnight the students will continue learning about the different biomes present on each continent, the geographical features of continents and how countries around the world are interconnected with Australia. They will also learn about how places have changed over time and how these changes are managed. Also, we will look at how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities altered the environment and sustained ways of living through their methods of land and resource management.

Year 6

What’s Happening in Year 6 in Weeks 3 and 4

The Year 6 students have had an exciting and action-packed start to Term 3! In Maths, they’ve been exploring the concepts of probability and chance, while in Literacy, they’ve been delving into the morphemes vis(e)/vid(e) and man(d). Highlights from the last two weeks include their enthusiastic participation in House Athletics Day, where Mitchell House claimed victory, and the celebration of 100 Days of Prep with their Prep buddies. It’s been a fantastic start to the term, full of learning and community spirit!

Wellbeing

Over the next fortnight, Year 6 students will continue their Wellbeing learning through the 4R’s Program – Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships, as part of the Victorian Curriculum. They will explore the concept of consent, respectful relationships and how to be an upstander when witnessing unsafe or inappropriate behaviour. Using age appropriate real-life scenarios, students will unpack how to give, ask for and refuse consent clearly, and discuss strategies for responding to gender-based violence. They will also learn about laws relating to harassment and abuse, and the importance of seeking help when needed. This learning promotes empathy, integrity and respectful behaviour both online and offline.

Literacy

During the next couple of weeks in Literacy, Year 6 students will be reading and studying The Grandest Bookshop in the World, exploring its themes, characters, and historical context. They'll be deepening their understanding of text-level features such as structure and meaning, alongside refining their sentence-level writing skills. In Word Origins, students will investigate Greek morphemes such as bio, graph, geo, and logy to expand their vocabulary and understanding of word construction. It's set to be a rich and engaging term of literacy learning!

Maths

In Numeracy over the next few weeks, Year 6 students will continue to develop their understanding of chance, building on their ability to predict and interpret outcomes. They will revisit numerical patterns to strengthen their number sense and mathematical reasoning. Additionally, students will enhance their problem-solving skills by tackling multi-step worded problems, applying their knowledge in practical and challenging ways.

Knowledge Unit

This term in their Knowledge Unit, Year 6 students will explore Biology as part of their Environmental Science lessons. Over the next few weeks, they will focus on understanding organisms and atoms, diving into the building blocks of life and the natural world. This integration will help deepen their scientific knowledge and appreciation for the environment. It’s an exciting opportunity for students to connect science concepts with real-world issues!

Homework

Students are expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, five times a week, to improve their reading skills. Additionally, they will receive Mathletics tasks every fortnight to reinforce and build on their mathematical knowledge.
