Pastoral Focus for the Start of Term 3

As we launch into Term 3, students are embracing a fresh start—one that comes with an increased focus on subject selection and future pathways. This week's Pastoral Period sessions encouraged students to reflect deeply on where they’re heading and how best to prepare for the choices ahead.

Years 7 & 8: Career Discovery through Strengths

Students in Years 7 and 8 engaged with a self-guided Career Tools activity designed to help them explore potential careers based on their personal strengths and interests.

While it’s early days for future planning at this level, it’s important to nurture curiosity and ambition. Students were encouraged to recognise that hard work and self-awareness now can lead to a clearer sense of direction later. Even if they’re still undecided, the groundwork is being laid for informed decisions as they grow.

Year 9: Futures Expo Preparation

Year 9 students participated in a workshop led by Mr Fini and our English and Mathematics coaches. The session encouraged early thinking ahead of next week’s Futures Expo, helping students understand the subject options available and how they relate to potential career paths. It is worth reminding parents/guardians of Year 9 students that Subject Selection Interviews will take place on Teams 4pm-5:30pm on the afternoons of 30th and 31st of July (next week!!).

Year 10: Pathways in Focus

Year 10 students attended a presentation created by Senior Years Curriculum Coach, Mrs Irene Balder, outlining the differences between the VCE Mainstream and VCE Vocational Major pathways and the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ of selecting pathways and subjects. .

Students aiming for university study typically pursue the VCE Mainstream, a rigorous two-year academic course culminating in an ATAR result used for university entrance. On the other hand, the VCE Vocational Major pathway offers a more hands-on learning approach, preparing students for TAFE or apprenticeships by blending traditional learning with practical experience through weekly work placements.

If further questions emerge about pathways, students (and parents) across the school are invited to make contact with our Pathways and Careers Coach Ms Dillon whose office is beside the Terry Feeley Learning Centre entrance.

The subject selection process for Year 10 will continue on 4 and 5 August, with interviews running from 4:00 to 5:30 PM via Teams.

Year 11: Identity and Wellbeing

In Year 11, students took part in programs focused on personal development. Our counsellors led a session for female students exploring the challenges they face in today’s world. Simultaneously, male students participated in a pilot incursion exploring 21st-century masculinity, a collaborative initiative led by Mr Bardi and our Year 12 VCE Vocational Major students.

Year 12: Next Steps & Career Guidance

Pathways and Careers Coach, Melissa Dillon, hosted an informative assembly for our Year 12 cohort, outlining key steps in applying for further study. Students received guidance on university and TAFE Open Days, tips for early course entry, and timely reminders to plan ahead for applications aligned with their abilities and aspirations.

Whole-School Reflection: What Comes Next

Across every year level, students have begun to ask themselves a powerful question: “What’s next for me?” This reflection is an essential part of the pastoral journey, as students align their academic planning with a sense of personal purpose.

Finding Purpose in the Future

True motivation is often rooted in purpose—and for our students, few questions carry more weight than what lies beyond the gates of St Peter’s College. With continued support and reflection, we aim to help them move forward with confidence, curiosity, and clarity.
