3/4 Learning Community
We are following the Gleams!
It has been a wonderful start to 2024 in the 3/4 Learning Community. The Grade 3s have shown great maturity and organisational skills in adapting to their new learning space upstairs and the Grade 4s have been exceptional role models displaying key leadership skills to assist everyone settle in. We have been implementing an organised and consistent morning routine through inspiration from the Berry Street Education Model.
In case you haven't heard, we have classroom pets in our community this year! In Tristen's classroom we have green tree frogs who enjoy cosying up to the warm corners of the tank and who love to snack on live crickets. And in Amanda's classroom there is a 140L cold water fish tank housing 10 large goldfish who never stop being hungry! Both sets of pets have been a great addition to our learning community and all the students enjoy interacting with and watching how these animals live in their habitats.
Literacy
We have set up our book boxes and organised our book tubs. Students are learning to build stamina in independent reading. We are focusing on summarising and locating important information in texts to assist in students' comprehension skills.
In Writing, students have interviewed a class mate and published their responses on an 'Introducing...' poster. We are beginning to write with the purpose to persuade and student's have used the inspiration of applying for leadership roles in the 3/4 Community to write a persuasive letter to the 3/4 Teachers.
Maths
We have launched the year by collecting data and presenting this information in a graph. The students collected responses to a preferred 'theme' for the 3/4 Learning Community spaces. We are please to announce that the spaces theme for this year is Biomes! We have 'The Forest' (Tristen's space), 'The Desert' (Laura's space), 'The Savanna' (Leah's space), 'The Australian Bush' (Kate's space) and 'The Ocean' (Amanda's space). Students have created 'Maths About Me' pages in their maths book to relay all the ways numbers and measurement impact their lives. We are heading into lots of work around whole numbers and Place Value.
Inquiry
We are looking at the ways Peace and Conflict impact our daily lives through the overarching statement 'Peace Begins with Me'. We will be investigating fairness and equality and ways in which these are not afforded to everybody. Students will have an opportunity to investigate ways they can affect change to peace and conflict in our school community.
Wellbeing
We have started the year with how the spaces are organised and connected all of our processes to our school Gleams of: Responsibility, Respect, Achievement, Kindness and Resilience. Students have been learning all about these Gleams and how they are shown in our learning community. We have also been focusing on Zones of Regulation and building our toolbox of strategies in how to return to the Green Zone through movement and mindfulness breaks.
Thank you to all the parents who were able to come by on our open afternoon and view our learning spaces and introduce yourself to your child's teacher. We liked meeting you all and seeing some of you again.
