5/6 Learning Community News

Introduction

Welcome to the ⅚ newsletter! To commence, the ⅚ community would like to acknowledge the importance and traditions of the traditional owners of the land that we learn, play, and grow on. To start off the new year, we have a great new group of student journalists who will be using their finish off time and some of their playtime to display what we have been working hard on. Additionally, we are proud to be welcoming a new addition to PBS. The name has now been changed to Wellbeing and will be focusing on gleams, zones of regulation and more calming activities for students to work on. Altogether, the ⅚ community has had an amazing start to 2024.

Literacy

In literacy, we have been writing origin stories for each of the gleams that will be read out to the preps and 1/2s. Over the past week, we have been writing our pre-assessments so we can make them really detailed and do our best work. The entire ⅚ cohort has been reading pages 74-102 of ‘World’s Worst Teacher’ by David Walliams and doing Reading Tracks. So far, we've been learning how to predict, connect, and ask good questions that relate to the story.

Numeracy

In numeracy, our main focus has been on place value, number, and algebra. We have done many PAT and pre-tests about general math and the topics we have been learning about. It has been a tough start to the year but the 5/6 community has shown a lot of resilience. After the pre-assessments we moved onto practicing number fluency, algorithms  and learning about multiples, factors and prime numbers. We have also begun NAPLAN practice and learning how to break down questions. It’s been extremely fun, and everybody has thoroughly enjoyed it.

Buddies

The Grade 5’s have welcomed the new foundation students into our school. The Grade 5 students have been showing their buddies around and putting on display their best behaviors to show the preppies the school's values. The preppies have been fitting into the school very well and have been thoroughly enjoying buddy time.

Gala Day

Welcome to the ⅚ newsletter! We are going to inform you about gala tryouts. In softball, we currently have 14 people trying out, and we have 10 spots on the team. In tryouts, we have practiced hitting the ball with the T and without it. We were also practicing catching and throwing because that is the most important part of softball. In cricket, we have 20 people trying out. On Thursday, we had the tryout session where we worked on our batting and bowling. Gerry is in charge of cricket and is going to decide who gets on the team, but don’t worry if you don’t make it because you will still have lots of fun doing rec sports! In volleyball, we have been playing matches against each other, and we have also been practicing digs, serves, spikes, and sets. There are currently 43 people trying out for volleyball, and only 20 people can get in. In tennis tryouts, we have been hitting to each other and showing our serves to Madi. 40 people came to tryouts but only 8 people get in. Gala day and recreational sport is only next Friday and the 5/6's can't wait!

Wellbeing

In wellbeing, we have been learning about the gleams and how to use apply them in life and learning. We have been talking to others about what makes us happy, good memories and building positive connections with our peers. Everyone has discussed what we want our space to look and feel like, creating expectations and building a respectful environment for all students and teachers. We are also learning about feelings, emotions and how our interactions or actions can impact each others wellbeing. We have also been exploring the different exercises to help us get back into the green zone if we are tired, stressed, or annoyed. Lauren has helped us get a better understanding of wellbeing and creating a caring school environment. We cant wait to learn more!
