Years 9 and 10 French Trivia Night

Liam Eliav, Year 9 French

Last Friday, four Year 9 students — myself, Evie Ellet, Elsie Stephens and Elise Song —along with a group of Year 10 students, including Alex Verginis, Simon Huang and Max Jenkinson, attended the AFTV French Trivia Night at Sacre Coeur Girls School in Glen Iris.

The evening featured six rounds of trivia on topics like the 2024 Paris Olympics and French history, interspersed with games and free food.

The event was highly entertaining, with energetic and friendly presenters keeping the atmosphere lively. As a bonus challenge, we decorated our tablecloth with French symbols and writing for an extra point.

Paired with a group of Year 10 students from Sacré-Cœur, we secured second place and won some great prizes! Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I look forward to participating again next year.

Years 10 and 11 Japanese Movie Excursion

Saisha Mehndiratta, Year 10

On 13 August, the Years 10 and 11 Japanese classes, along with Sano and Guyton Sensei, had the exciting opportunity to attend the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) to watch the anime movie The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store

This comedic anime movie was set in an alternative world where ‘the customer is always right’ – but never human. The animations were so cute and expressive, with colourful characters full of different quirks.

During the movie, I was able to recognise and reinforce some of the concepts we've covered in class, including the phrase  'いらっしゃいませ' (irasshaimase), which means welcome.

It was a refreshing change to step out of the classroom and enjoy this experience with my peers. I thoroughly enjoyed the film and hope to attend MIFF again in the future!

Farewell to Hiroshima Jogakuin students and staff

The last two weeks have been a wonderful opportunity for Kilvington students to engage with students from our partner school, Hiroshima Jogakuin. We thank the group for being such wonderful guests, sharing their culture and appreciation of everything Kilvington has to offer.

The Peace Ceremony on Tuesday 6 August was a significant event, teaching our Year 7 students about the values of peace, harmony and tolerance. The experience of making paper cranes, which the Hiroshima Jogakuin students have now taken back to the Peace Memorial in their hometown, was a meaningful and impactful experience for Kilvington students.

Their farewell performance, mini cultural festival and speeches were filled with gratitude and appreciation. We also thank their enthusiastic staff and AIIU staff member, Mrs Ruth Vallejo, for taking such good care of the group.

A special thanks to the 19 Kilvington host families who generously hosted our visitors. Your participation in our Global Connections Program is crucial in maintaining the strong partnerships we cherish with our partner schools.

Finally, thanks to all Kilvington staff and students for contributing to the success of this enriching experience for everyone involved.
