Introducing Kilvington's new timetable structure for 2025
After careful consideration and planning, we're excited to introduce a new timetable structure for both the Junior and Senior Schools in 2025.
Our primary objective in introducing this new structure is to simplify the current timetable. At present, lesson lengths vary across the School, and on some days, different structures are in place. The new timetable will standardise these variations. We’re pleased to say that this simplification has been achieved without reducing face-to-face learning time from Prep to Year 12.
KEY OUTCOMES FOR PREP TO YEAR 12
- Consistent daily structure: The timetable will follow the same structure for every day of the week.
- Unchanged start and finish times: Start and finish times remain unchanged, with no change to overall learning time for any year level.
- Junior School lunch time: Junior School will have an earlier lunch, and can therefore participate in co-curricular activities with Senior School students.
- Aligned Junior and Senior School schedules: The Junior and Senior School timetable will be more aligned so teachers can teach across both schools.
- Year 12 face-to-face learning time: Year 12 students will maintain the same face-to-face learning time for each subject.
- Increased class frequency: Due to consistent 50-minute session times, classes will be more frequent across all subjects in Senior School.
- Enhanced Mentor Time: Time will be increased for Mentor sessions in the Senior School, allowing for a more meaningful program of activities.
JUNIOR SCHOOL TIMETABLE
Due to the alignment of five sessions each day across the entire school, Junior School students will have the chance to be taught by Senior School specialist teachers.
They'll also have an earlier lunch, enabling them to participate in co-curricular activities with Senior School students. Additionally, GEM (Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness) time will now be consolidated into one dedicated session each day, allowing for a more focused social-emotional learning program.
SENIOR SCHOOL TIMETABLE
The frequency of classes across all subjects in the Senior School will increase by standardising each lesson to 50 minutes. This adjustment means students will see their teachers more often each cycle, which will support learning by giving students more opportunities to consolidate their knowledge.
According to the Australian Education Research Organisation, this approach, known as spacing and retrieval, is effective in helping students commit their learning to long-term memory.
SESSION BEFORE LUNCH
Furthermore, the session before lunch will now be devoted to Mentor time, along with activities such as Choir, Year 10 Careers, and other special events that would previously have taken place during class time. This adjustment also accommodates the travel time needed for Senior School students participating in the Eastern Independent Schools of Melbourne (EISM) sporting competition.
This marks an exciting new chapter for our school community, and we are confident that our students will benefit from this more streamlined structure. Please find below a downloadable copy of the new timetable.
Nationally consistent collection of data
In early August, we submitted our Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) report. The NCCD is an annual collection of information about students with disabilities. Throughout the year, we make reasonable adjustments for these students, and this information is compiled and submitted. The data helps the government and other authorities to understand how they can better support schools.
