SWELL Week

What a fantastic week we had last week finishing off with our wonderful welcome picnic last Friday. It was so lovely to see so many children and their families joining us with some great weather and fun. The children’s dance performances were so entertaining and full of energy. It was fantastic to work with Kira from the Stomp Dance company on the performance. We certainly have some talented students at SFS!

PBL

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is implemented to improve the learning and wellbeing of all students in all school settings. The following summary is taken from the NSW Government Education website.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an evidence-based framework that brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people.

When PBL is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:

  • reduced inappropriate behaviour
  • increased time focused on instruction
  • improved social-emotional wellbeing
  • positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
  • support for teachers to teach, model and respond effectively to student need
  • a predictable learning environment where staff and students know what is expected to deliver effective practices that can be sustained over time

At SFS, our PBL school wide expectations are:

Respect, Responsibility and Kindness

This week at school we have continued to focus on learning school routines for packing up, entering the learning space and going to mass. The children then had the chance to practice the routines during the week. When teacher see students demonstrated the expected behaviours, children may be awarded a PBL card. They will bring the card home and ask a parent/carer to sign it. The signed card comes back to school and goes into a raffle box. Winners will be drawn on Friday. Talk to your child about why they have received the card. The children can then keep the card as an award. For winning the raffle students can choose to have some free time in class or outside or come dressed in casual clothes the following Monday. We will look at introducing some other prizes during the year.

Lunchtime Clubs

Our Lunchtime clubs started this week. The children put their names down on a sign in sheet to join the clubs they were interested in. Some groups were incredibly popular, so we have given children a block of weeks to join or they might get a chance in Term 2 if they missed out this term.

Taryn is running a Digital Technology club for Juniors this term on a Tuesday. They enjoyed playing with the Beebots this week.

Katherine also ran art club on Tuesday with a group of Senior students. The children had some agency in choosing what they wanted to do and enjoyed some free creative time creating art.

Seasons for Growth

Seasons for Growth is a program which focuses on strengthening the social and emotional wellbeing of children, young people and adults following significant change and loss in their lives. If your child has had an experience of change or loss such as death of a loved one or pet, divorce or separation of parents, birth of a new sibling, moving house or some other change which has impacted on them, then this program may help them. The program is for children in Year 1 to 6 and runs once a week for 8 weeks in a small group.

I am a trained Seasons for Growth Companion, trained through McKillop Family Services. I would like to start a Year 1 and 2 group this term. If your child is in Year 1 or 2 and you think they would benefit from participating in the program, please contact me  rlenko@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au

If you have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please do not hesitate to contact me.
