Turn Around
A major theme of the Scripture readings is 'Turn to the Lord to be healed'.
The first reading relates an old Jewish practice of branding as unclean those who have leprosy and setting them apart from the community. It may also symbolise current practices of labelling persons and groups and excluding them from the community. The psalmist then tells us that we can attain acceptance and healing if we turn to the Lord.
In the reading from the First Letter to the Corinthians, Paul calls upon the people to build up the community by imitating him, who imitates Christ.
The leper in the Gospel reading did not wait for Jesus to come to him; he recognised his affliction and turned to Jesus for healing. Jesus healed him and sent him back to the community.
Discussion Starters
- In this week’s gospel who came to Jesus?
- The man had a sickness which made him an outcast. What does it mean to be an outcast?
- What did Jesus do when he met him?
- Jesus showed compassion and kindness when others would have sent the man away.
- What did the man do when he was cured?
- What would it be like to be an outcast or an outsider?
- Jesus asks us to be kind to outsiders. How can we show kindness to people who do not feel included?
- We pray that this week we will look out for ways we can show kindness to people in need.

GRADE 5/6 SOCIAL JUSTICE TEAM – MINI VINNIES
MINI VINNIES PLEDGE
Today we looked at our Mini Vinnies pledge that students will be making later this term when they make a commitment to be part of Mini Vinnies for the year and receive their badges. We deconstructed the pledge and discussed what it means in each students everyday life.
Mini Vinnies Pledge:
As a member of Mini Vinnies, I promise to make a difference in my world by:
• Caring for, respecting and loving myself;
• Strengthening my friendship with Jesus by praying each day and talking to others about him;
• Caring for others in my school and community by being a friend to those who are alone, in need or in trouble;
• Contributing to the happiness of my family through my help, respect, consideration, joy and kindness;
• Caring for, appreciating and enjoying God’s creation: the environment;
• Treating others the way I would like them to treat me
VINNIES YOUTH ENGAGEMENT TEAM NEWSLETTER ARTICLE
Last year myself, Peacelyne and 8 Mini Vinnies attended the St Vincent de Paul School Conference Network event. There were 3 schools represented there: Nazareth College (our host school), St Elizabeth’s Primary School and ourselves. In this term’s Youth Engagement Newsletter that was sent out, St Francis de Sales featured:
We also started looking at Project Compassion for this year and the theme: For all future generations. We decorated the Project Compassion boxes in House colours and they are ready to be delivered next week as Lent begins.
