Winter is Here
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of conducting a school tour for a group of prospective parents and students. While many were immediately impressed by the College facilities, our expansive outdoor spaces and the areas available for students to relax, connect and learn, what stood out most to them was the calm and positive atmosphere throughout the College. As we moved through classrooms and learning spaces, a number of parents commented on the respectful way students transitioned between classes and the calm, orderly environment that existed across the school.
What particularly resonated with our visitors was the engagement between students and teachers within the classroom. Parents spoke about how focused students were on their learning, the positive interactions taking place and the way students remained on task as lessons progressed, despite a tour group moving through the College. Hearing these comments was something I felt incredibly proud of, because it reflects exactly what Cheltenham Secondary College is about.
That is Cheltenham. Our students are fantastic young people who engage respectfully in their learning, support one another and continually strive for their personal best. The positive culture that exists within our College is built upon strong relationships, high expectations and a genuine sense of community. It is something our staff work hard to nurture every day, and something our students should be extremely proud of.
Year 9 - IGNITE Program
Over the final weeks of Term 1 and the beginning of Term 2, our Year 9 students have been immersed in a range of rich and purposeful learning experiences designed to challenge their thinking, build confidence and prepare them for the opportunities and pathways ahead. Each Year 9 Form Group has participated in a carefully designed program focused on developing leadership, independence and real-world skills, while encouraging students to begin thinking more deeply about their future aspirations and goals.
Throughout the program, students have completed a variety of practical qualifications and experiences, including First Aid training, Safe Food Handling certification and a Barista Course. These opportunities not only provide students with valuable life skills, but also expose them to workplace expectations and potential employment pathways. Students have also completed the Morrisby Career Survey, helping them explore their strengths, interests and possible future career directions, while also developing important employability skills through the writing of resumes and introductory letters.
What has been particularly pleasing has been the way many students have embraced stepping outside of their comfort zones and engaging with activities that encourage reflection, responsibility and personal growth. The program immerses students in experiences that challenge them to think critically about their future and the many opportunities available to them. As a College, we are incredibly proud of the maturity, enthusiasm and positive attitude shown by our Year 9 students throughout the program, and we thank the staff and external providers who have supported these valuable learning experiences.
Avenues Exchange
One of the most special traditions within our College community is the Avenues Exchange, a program that has now connected young people, families and communities for almost 60 years. What began as a simple idea and friendship between two educators has grown into something truly remarkable: a tradition built on trust, respect, friendship and shared experiences. Across six decades, generations of students have had the opportunity to form lifelong memories and connections, while gaining a deeper understanding of life beyond their own community.
As we move through Term 2, our students are now fully immersed in training and preparation for their upcoming venture to Adelaide in the final week of term. There is already a strong sense of excitement building amongst the group as students work together, support one another and prepare for the experiences and challenges ahead. The respect that has been built between the two schools over many years is something incredibly special and continues to be at the heart of the program today.
Programs such as the Avenues Exchange remind us of the powerful role schools play in bringing communities together. In a world that can often feel increasingly disconnected, the Exchange continues to demonstrate the importance of shared traditions. We are incredibly proud of the history of this program and the many students, staff and families who have contributed to its success over the past six decades. The legacy created from one simple idea between two friends continues to shape and enrich the lives of our students and communities today.
New Building
The College is approaching a very exciting milestone, with our new Year 7 and Administration Building now nearing completion. At the beginning of next week, our administration staff will begin transitioning into the new facility as we prepare for the next stage of this significant project. While there are still a number of final touch-ups and rectification works to be completed, we are hopeful that our Year 7 students will transition into the building within the following week or two once these final details are completed. This is a wonderful moment for our College and broader community, and one that reflects a strong investment in the future of our students and learning environment.
The new building will provide modern, purpose-built learning and administration spaces designed to support student learning, wellbeing and connection. It will create a welcoming front entrance to the College and significantly enhance the daily experience for students, staff and families. It is always exciting to see a project move from plans and construction into a vibrant space that will soon be filled with students, learning and community activity.
Importantly, the completion of this stage also allows us to shift our focus toward the redevelopment of the current Administration Building, which will become the College Wellbeing Hub. This space will accommodate our Wellbeing staff, student leadership programs and Breakfast Club, while also providing a dedicated home for many of our student seminars and support programs. The development of the Wellbeing Hub represents another important step in strengthening the support structures available to our students and ensuring that wellbeing, connection and student voice remain at the centre of our College community.
End of Semester Exams
While it feels like we have only just started Term 2, the end of semester exams are fast approaching. It is more important than ever that students begin their preparations early by seeking feedback and guidance from their teachers and focusing on creating a structured study and homework schedule. Developing consistent study habits now will help students manage their workload effectively and ensure that preparation does not become overwhelming in the lead up to exams.
Success during the examination period is rarely achieved through last-minute preparation. Rather, it comes from regular revision, organisation, persistence and a willingness to ask questions and seek support when required. I encourage all students to make the most of the opportunities available to them, including teacher support, study sessions and collaborative learning with peers. By remaining focused and proactive, students place themselves in the best possible position to achieve their personal best.
Winter is Here
Finally, as the weather begins to change and we move into the colder months, I would encourage all students to ensure they are keeping warm and dry throughout the school day. Attending school prepared for the conditions, including wearing the correct uniform items such as College outerwear and waterproof jackets when required, helps students remain comfortable and focused on their learning. As always, we thank families for their ongoing support in ensuring students arrive at school ready for the day ahead.
