Embracing Diversity: Term 2 School Development Day Focuses on Inclusion, Disability, and Neurodiversity

On the recent Term 2 School Development Day, educators across New South Wales united to deepen their understanding and practice of inclusion, disability, and neurodiversity. This day of professional learning highlighted the department’s ongoing commitment to creating welcoming, supportive, and equitable learning environments for every student.

A standout event was the Nirimba Collegiate School Development Day at Wyndham College, where staff from four schools engaged in a hands-on exploration of inclusion and neurodiversity. Targeted workshops featured experts in educational inclusion and disability support, alongside sessions led by staff sharing their personal and professional experiences. This collaborative environment fostered empathy and practical insight, enabling educators to develop tailored strategies to meet the diverse needs of their students.

Wyndham College staff participated in activities focused on building capacity in differentiated instruction, sensory-friendly classrooms, and effective communication with families and carers. The emphasis on neurodiversity recognised and valued cognitive differences such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and dyslexia, encouraging educators to move beyond deficit models and celebrate individual strengths. The College proudly supports two inclusive education classes for students with autism and other learning disabilities, alongside neurodiverse students, as well as those with physical disabilities and mental health needs, all of whom are valued, dynamic members of the school community.

Broadly, the day provided comprehensive exploration of the social and educational impacts of disability and neurodiversity, fostering cultures that see diversity as a strength. Educators developed practical tools to better identify and respond to students’ varied needs across the state.

The School Development Day also reinforced the vital role of partnerships with families and communities in supporting inclusive education. Through shared goals and open communication, schools can ensure all students access meaningful learning and opportunities to succeed.

This professional learning aligns with the NSW Department of Education’s commitment, under Secretary Murat Dizdar PSM, to fostering inclusive practices rooted in respect, empathy, and equity.

Together, we are building schools where every student is seen, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.

School Attendance

Regular attendance is essential for every student’s learning, wellbeing, and overall success. Students are expected to attend all timetabled lessons each day. If a student does not have a class scheduled before recess, they are required to arrive by 10:10 am for Connect. Similarly, students who do not have classes after lunch may sign out early. All students are to be on site between 10.10am and 1:20pm, and to attend timetabled study sessions if they do not have a class between these times.

Consistent attendance helps students build positive relationships, develop important social skills, and stay on track with their learning. If your child is unable to attend school, please notify the school promptly and provide a reason for their absence. By working together, we can ensure every student has the best opportunity to thrive.

School Captains Report

It was an honour to represent Wyndham College at the Riverstone Dawn Service this year. The incredible turnout from the local community, alongside students from multiple schools, reflected a deep and shared respect for the sacrifices of our ANZACs. Standing together in the early morning, there was a strong sense of unity and reflection. Laying a wreath on behalf of our school and observing a moment of silence was a meaningful experience, and listening to the commemorative music provided a powerful reminder of the courage and service of those who have served our country.

We were also proud to lead our school ANZAC Service, which ran smoothly thanks to the efforts of the Captains, SRC and all involved. It was a privilege to have servicemen from Nirimba attend, adding further significance to the ceremony.

A particular highlight was meeting a former Naval serviceman from the ex-Nirimba base, whose presence and stories helped bring deeper meaning to the commemoration.

As we move through the term, we’re excited to be preparing for one of the highlights of the school calendar—Multicultural Day. Planning is already well underway, with a variety of food stalls and activities being organised to celebrate the diversity within our school community. We encourage all students to get involved, whether that’s through cooking,

performing, or contributing ideas. It’s a great opportunity to share culture, connect with others, and showcase the vibrant spirit of Wyndham College, so start your planning now.

If you have any ideas you’d like to see brought to life, Captains meetings with the Principal are held every fortnight on Thursdays—so feel free to come along and have your say.

Finally, SRC elections have recently been completed, and we look forward to announcing the new representatives very soon. We’re excited to see the ideas and leadership they will bring to our school community.
