Junior School Kitchen Garden Afternoon Tea

Thank you to the families of the junior school students who were able to attend our afternoon tea last Thursday. We understand it is not always convenient for you to attend and appreciate your efforts. Our presentation focused on having some students share statements about their activities, while families viewed photos of the students over their kitchen garden sessions. We are pleased to say that all of the food shared at our afternoon tea disappeared into hungry and appreciative mouths! Thank you for your very positive feedback about the food that the students prepared - they really are quite amazing, capable and so interested in cooking and gardening, and eating!!!

Kitchen Garden - PLR

The students in Prep LR made mini crustless quiches last week and investigated the compost. It was a lovely sunny 26 degrees outside for their session and it was met with enthusiastic and lively students as always. Here are some photos:

Kitchen Garden - 4M

Last week the students in 4M completed their kitchen garden sessions making pizza dough using two ingredients: Greek yoghurt and self raising flour. They then added their own toppings to make their own pizzas baked in the oven. These were very simple and quite yummy. In the garden the students observed the snow pea plants and tomato plants, noticing how they grow and how they need support structures to help them stand. The year 4s used bamboo sticks and t-shirt strips to make teepee structures. The students prepared the garden bed for further planting by pulling out the old plants, and enriching the soil with compost.

Year 4 Stewardship

The year 4 students have been very busy reusing plastic bottle tops and straws and beads that would otherwise be destined for landfill. The brief was to make something aesthetic and functional that could be displayed at school for the benefit of all. With some guidance and inspiration from Ms Pitt, it was decided that they would make plastic bottle top 'curtains'. Using Mrs Deegan's very special plastic darning needles (thanks to Chiara for keeping a close eye on them and ensuring they were all returned after each session), students created vibrant, appealing hangings that when joined together, make a 'curtain'. It has tested the students' resolve, their stamina and perseverance levels. They have had to work collaboratively and cooperatively for the greater good - a great reminder that as stewards, it is all about giving, helping and caring for others.

On that theme, the students will use their final session to make cards using leftover materials from the Kitchen Garden program including recycled paper, calico flower imprints and paper. These will be attached to our scented herb sachets and left outside Church for people in our community to take home during the season of Advent.

Holiday Chicken Care Helpers

We are again seeking help from our community to volunteer time during the holiday break to come up to school and help care for our chickens. This requires a minimum of 30 mins and it is also a great way to entertain the kids for free during the holidays. For those of you who have helped before and are available and willing to help out again, please email me with time periods you are free. For anyone new willing to give it a go but would like more information, please email me: adeegan@sjwheelershill.catholic.edu.au

The dates requiring volunteers include from Saturday 16th December through to Sunday 28th January. It is quite a long time, therefore we would appreciate all the help we can get, and offers of more than one day if possible.

Please consider offering to help - it is very easy and fun for the kids.

Thank you all in advance.
