Whole School Activities

Whole School Sport

We have been taking advantage of the recent sunny Autumn days by having combined sport for our Physical Education lessons. Most recently we all enjoyed doing soccer skills in rotations where we dribbled the ball around markers and took shots at goal.

We have also been continuing to train for the Cross Country which is to be held in the last week of term.

Paper Plane Competition

Rocky River held a Paper Plane competition on Monday which saw all students at school that day design, create, decorate and fly their planes.

There was a great deal of enthusiasm and all participants enjoyed spending time together for this good natured competition.

Our awards for best design went to Anthony and Eden in Lower Division, while Anna, Ivory, Lucy and Alahna won for Upper Division. The makers of the planes that flew the furthest were Aiden (15.3m), Harrison S (14.7m) Toby (8.3m) and Reagan (8m).

Congratulations to all students for participating in a great spirit where we celebrated the  success of all.

School Garden

Our school garden was planted with winter crops last Friday thanks to the help of some Upper Division students. Broccoli, onions, broad beans, carrots, lettuce and brussel sprouts will hopefully all be growing in the garden beds that Mr Hine prepared for us. Thanks to the students who assisted and to Mr Hine for his work in making the garden such a lovely space.

Music

Our Upper Division students have been practicing hard and it is quite common to find them in the playground at lunchtime taking advantage of the good weather and becoming more familiar with their instruments. Well done to all - we look forward to hearing you play soon.

Upper Division

Upper Division have been fortunate to have Associate Professor Brendan Jacobs from UNE teaching STEM lessons each fortnight. Last week Upper Division were introduced to the word "hypothesis" and also to the structure of "if-then" statements. Students then designed their own tests based on this and documented their thoughts.

Upper Division also learnt about gravity this week, performing a number of experiments in class designed to show how gravity is in effect all around us. We conducted an experiment where we dropped two pieces of paper that had the same weight - however one was scrunched up and one was not.  The role of air resistance in this experiment was discussed and the results matched predictions.

Lower Division

Lower Division have continued to work hard and started a new English unit this week on Character, Imagery, Symbol and connotation. In this unit we will look at how authors use characters to engage their readers and tell their stories effectively. We will re-tell some classic stories, adding our own twists to the plot and sharing the results with our classmates. Lower Division have been enjoying creating and publishing their work using Book Creator, and it is wonderful to see how their skills and knowledge using this medium have improved
