Classroom learning

PREP

Reading

Our Prep students have been actively developing their early reading skills! We've been focusing on letter recognition and their corresponding sounds, with a special emphasis on the SATPIN letters. One of their favourite activities has been sorting pictures by their beginning sounds, reinforcing the connection between letters and sounds. Now, they're using these letters to build and read simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words like pat, sit, tin, and tan—and they’re loving the challenge!

Writing

We have been practising letter formation and using an ever-growing knowledge of sounds to spell words. We have been working on identifying the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words and writing the matching letters. It’s amazing to see their confidence grow as they write!

Mathematics

Preps have been exploring Time during Maths sessions.  We have been investigating the days of the week and  learning to sequence the days in order, as well as use words such as morning, afternoon, evening, day and night to describe daily routines. We have been comparing weekdays and weekends, sparking great discussions about the different activities we do throughout the week.

We are currently focusing on numbers; learning to recognise numerals, how to write them correctly, and using key vocabulary such as larger, smaller, before, and after. The children have been exploring different ways to represent numbers using counters, ten frames, number lines, fingers, words, and dominoes.

We have been playing games like Race to 10, where students roll a die and move that many spaces, reinforcing number recognition and counting skills.

Additionally, we’ve been developing our ability to subitise to 5—recognising small groups of objects instantly without counting one by one and have been enjoying playing Tenzi where we roll 10 dice with the goal of collecting as many of a target number until all our rolls are that number.

Finally, we are counting how many days we have been at school and today will be number 35!

Religion

We have been reflecting on the Easter story. The Preps enjoyed drawing pictures of their favourite moments and sharing their thoughts on this special time of year. We talked about how Easter is a season of both sadness and joy, and the children beautifully expressed what brings them happiness. It was a heartwarming and meaningful discussion.

What our Preps have to say about what they like about school so far:

Finn: I like how we do fun writing and maths
Florence: I liked watching the video of the Easter Story.
Grace: I like playing outside with my friends
Marley: I like the good morning and afternoon song we sing together.
Sully: I liked playing tenzi in maths
Archer: I like writing with my greylead pencil
Livvy: I like the letter craft cutting and paste activities that we get to take home.
Oliver: I liked the hoops activity where we showed different ways to make numbers.
Teagan: I like learning about the sounds that letters make.

We’re so proud of the enthusiasm and progress our Preps are showing each day. Keep up the great learning!
