Maths holiday activities

Explore our collection of fun maths activities over the school holidays.

  • Baking cookies – challenge your child to a bake-off and reveal their creative side by getting them to bake cookies of different shapes and sizes.
  • Beach and bath time – develop your child's understanding of volume and capacity by using different sized and shaped buckets.
  • Bubble wands – work with your child to develop their understanding of shapes with these fun bubble wands!
  • Car cricket – car cricket is a fast-paced road trip game with scoring variations based on different colour cars and vehicle sizes.
  • Car trip playlist – on your next road trip, let your child choose the music. But they have to create a playlist that lasts the exact duration of the trip.
  • Cooking for guests – having friends over for spaghetti is always fun, but it takes some planning. Help your child estimate for extra portions.
  • Create a robot – teach your child basic geometry by using shapes cut from paper to design their very own robot poster.
  • Giving directions without a map – giving directions is a skill in itself. Help your child develop their understanding of angles and direction with this two-player game.
  • I-spy with 3D objects – I-spy is a fun game to play when you're travelling by car, but you'd be surprised how much your child will learn if you play using 3D objects.
  • Navigate with a map – give your child a map of a venue that you are visiting – like the zoo, a theme park or even a shopping centre, and put them in charge of navigation.
  • Packing your suitcase – a road trip, camp or sleepover is an exciting way to build your child's understanding of capacity, using the process of packing.
  • Paper planes – this fun activity with paper planes can teach your child the basics of measuring length.
  • Rubik's cube – solving a Rubik's cube is not easy on the first try, but there's actually an algebraic formula to help your child complete the puzzle.
  • Sketching a portrait – your child can use shapes to hone their drawing craft of living subjects - from plants to family members.
  • Swimming strokes – get your child to jump in the water and swim with their friends to improve their skills at estimating length.

 

Zoos Victoria​​

Zoos Victoria is pleased to advise that children under 16 years of age receive free admission to Healesville Sanctuary, Kyabram Fauna Park, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo on:

  • Weekends  
  • Victorian Public holidays
  • Victorian Government school holidays.

Please note, children under 16 must be accompanied/supervised by an adult. If they are not accompanied by an adult, they will be refused entry.

 

The New Elephant Habitat

Embark on a walking safari adventure to discover the elephants in their new world-class, open-range home.

Enjoy views overlooking the pools from the terrace, where you can also grab a bite to eat and a coffee from the new Waterhole Café.

Wander under the Elephant Overpass and check out the Elephant Barn, where you can learn about how the herd uses the space and how essential it is for them to have choice and control over their day.
