Head of Sport Report
As winter sport begins, team selection has recently been a hot topic. Students invest time and energy into training and trials, and naturally want to be selected in top teams. With that in mind, it's important to clarify how selections are made.
Selections are based on current performance, not past reputation. Trials are key moments for students to show skill, fitness, teamwork, and game awareness. Previous inclusion doesn't guarantee a spot—everyone is assessed on how they perform now.
All selections are merit-based. Coaches aim to build balanced, competitive teams and assess every player equally. Bias has no place in the process. Final decisions are made professionally, considering skill, attitude, positional needs, and team dynamics—not friendships or popularity.
We know being left out can be tough. But resilience, not resentment, is the best response. Selection setbacks are opportunities to grow and improve. Coaches value persistence and effort, and we encourage all players to keep striving.
Whether selected in the team you want or not, every player contributes to our team culture. Let’s support one another and continue to play with integrity, fairness, and pride.
Congratulations
Athletics
From April 4th-5th, Zara Nicholas competed at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth. Zara was competing in the U18 Women's Heptathlon. Heptathlon is an event that runs over two days with seven events, where athletes score points based on their performances. The athlete with the highest score by the end wins- it's an event to find the most versatile/all-round athlete, with 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200m on day 1, and long jump, javelin, and 800m on day 2.
After two days, Zara finished in 4th place in Australia in the U18 women's heptathlon, with a small heptathlon personal best of 4480 points, and personal bests in the 800m and 100m hurdles too. Zara was very happy with these results after so much hard work and time! Zara qualified for these championships through national qualifying standards last/this season, after coming 1st in the U18 ACT Canberra combined events championships in December 2024, and 3rd in the NSW U18 Heptathlon in January. This is an outstanding result for Zara and fitting for all the training that she has put into achieving this standard. Congratulations and we look forward to hearing of your future success!
