Inquiry

Term 1 - As we reach the end of Term 1 we have seen some wonderful examples of work in our Geography unit ‘Our Place in the World’. Foundation students have learned about their local area, moving into investigating Australia and its state and territories in Year 1/2. This was expanded further with the Year 3/4 students exploring Australia and its neighbouring countries. Year 5/6 have been learning about Australia’s place in the world by comparing things like life expectancy, education, GDP, trade and current global issues with other countries. It is fantastic to see such a progression of learning and questioning across the school.

Term 2 - Our next throughline focuses on history and Indigenous perspectives in Australia. Our unit is called  ‘Dhumba / Ngarnga’ meaning talk / listen, key phrases from two of the tribes within the Kulin nation: Boon Wurrung and Woi Wurrung.

Across the school students will investigate key stories, people, sites, and events of significance that have shaped Indigenous communities in Australia. They will explore key concepts around key dates, celebrations, and commemorations and how traditions are passed onto future generations.

The students learn about;

  • daily life, societal change and community
  • compare the past and present [chronology]
  • how and why life changes [cause and effect]
  • perspectives on historical events
  • personal stories
  • changes in local and global environments
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture and traditions
