Health and Physical Education
Over the past three weeks, our students have been having a fantastic time in Physical Education! We've been busy learning new skills, playing exciting games, and working together as a team. Here’s a look at what our students have been up to.
Preps
It’s been an absolute joy getting to know our new Preps this term! They are full of energy and enthusiasm for sport. In the first few weeks, I took the students on a tour of the areas we’ll be using in PE, including the gym, so they could familiarise themselves with the spaces. We also focused on classroom routines and expectations, especially the importance of staying in a straight line and being quiet when walking to the gym. To kick off our physical activity, we played simple games like Colour Lines, Traffic Lights and Music Statues. These games not only helped them learn some basic rules but also gave me the chance to introduce some Spanish vocabulary.
It’s wonderful to see how quickly they are picking things up and I’m excited to continue our learning journey together!
Grades 1/2
For our Grade 1 and 2 students, we’ve focused on establishing solid routines, particularly lining up by roll order and staying quiet during transitions to other areas of the school. This is important because it helps create a calm and organised environment.
This week, the students have been enjoying a variety of tagging games in their new groups. These games have been a great way for them to work together, follow instructions, and have fun! This term, the focus is on "Creating and Participating in Games". This will give students the opportunity to design their own games, practice their teamwork skills, and engage in physical activity that promotes cooperation and creativity.
These activities help build important life skills like communication, problem-solving, and decision-making.
Grades 3/4
For the Grade 3 and 4 students, we’ve spent the first two weeks focusing on lining up by roll order and practicing good transitions, just like the younger grades.
This week, we’ve begun our softball program, which will continue over the next few weeks. Softball is part of our interschool sport program, and it’s important that students understand the rules and skills involved, as they will use these skills when they participate in the sport in Grades 5 and 6. In the coming weeks, we’ll focus on developing skills such as throwing, catching, running and batting, with a special emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship.
Grades 5/6
The Grades 5 and 6 students started the term with the same focus on lining up by roll order and participating in games that encourage teamwork and cooperation.
This week, we have begun to dive deeper into softball, with a particular focus on applying movement concepts and strategies related to batting and fielding. In these lessons, students are learning how to move efficiently and effectively to field the ball, as well as developing their batting technique. This is a great opportunity for them to apply critical thinking and strategy in a sports context, all while having fun and staying active.
We’ve had a fantastic start to the term, and I can’t wait to see all of our students continue to grow in their physical education skills over the coming weeks!
Yours faithfully,
