Year 6

Our Year 6 group have settled in really well and are taking on all the responsibilities that come with being the leaders of the school with pride. I’m confident a highlight for most students so far will be spending time with their little buddies, guiding and nurturing the Prep students with so much love and kindness.

We are well underway in our classroom learning after spending the first two weeks of term going through school expectations through the ‘Start Right’ program. Students have been engaging well in these lessons and showing these behaviours, falling into routine prompty.

We are eager to find out if Felix will be reunited with his parents in our novel, Once, which has been provoking lots of conversation about World War II. We are researching and taking notes for our information reports to be completed later in the term.

We have deep dived right into Maths, exploring square and triangular numbers, factors and multiples as well as multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. We will be focusing on decimals for the next few weeks.

In Wellbeing, we completed personality trait quizzes and it was very interesting reading the results, with a lot of students’ being scarily accurate to their actual personality! We will be beginning The Resilience Project in the coming weeks which we are all looking forward to.

We also have lots of sport coming up with whole school cross country as well as the summer sports competition, cricket and t-ball, happening in a few weeks. Stay tuned for updates on these days!

Our leaders, along with Student Council, will be attending the Dream and Lead excursion to the Convention Centre in Melbourne this term as well. Please keep an eye out for reminders for this.

Here’s what we’ll be exploring across various subjects and activities for the rest of the term:

Reading: Once by Morris Gleitzman

This term, we will be reading Once by Morris Gleitzman, a powerful story set during World War II. Students will focus on understanding key themes such as survival, friendship, and bravery. We will work on showing comprehension through discussions, making inferences, and responding to the text with both written and oral reflections. This will help deepen students’ understanding of the book while enhancing their reading skills.

Writing

In writing, we will focus on improving sentence-level writing, refining sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation to create clear and engaging content. Students will also work on writing an informative report about a country in Europe. This will involve researching their chosen country and organizing the information into a well-structured report, complete with an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Maths

In maths, we will be focusing on place value and decimals, helping students understand how numbers work in different place values and how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals. We will also explore the order of operations (BIDMAS) and learn how to approach complex problems by following the correct sequence of steps. These skills are essential for tackling a variety of mathematical challenges.

Wellbeing: Leadership & Teamwork

This term, we will introduce the concept of leadership and teamwork as students take on roles within the Year 6 team. Through various classroom activities, students will learn how to collaborate effectively, support one another, and take on leadership responsibilities with confidence. The focus will be on building a positive and inclusive classroom environment where everyone’s contributions are valued.

Sport

This term, students will participate in a variety of exciting sports activities. We will be training for the Cross Country event, focusing on endurance and stamina. Interschool T-Ball and cricket will give students the chance to develop their teamwork and sporting skills while competing against other schools. In Week 9, we’ll wrap up the term with the vibrant and fun Colour Run, where students can get active, have fun, and celebrate their efforts.

We look forward to an exciting and action-packed term filled with learning, growth, and plenty of opportunities to shine in both academics and sports!
