Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.
Mathematics: We are aiming for all students to confidently recall their multiplication facts up to 12×12 by the end of the year — not long to go now! Knowing these facts is extremely beneficial, as it supports so many areas of mathematics.
This is our final push: choose the facts you feel least confident with and practise them in whatever way works best for you.
Inquiry:
Week 8 will be a valuable opportunity for students to rest and enjoy our end-of-year festivities. After reading their reflection journals, it’s clear that students have already made the adjustments we would typically focus on during this week’s reflection time. Throughout each trading session, they thoughtfully considered how to improve their systems, adjust products, and refine pricing.
Because of this, it is not necessary to trade again in Week 8, and many students shared that a break would be appreciated as we begin to wind down for the year.
Any leftover products will be purchased by the school so that all business profits can still go towards ALWS.
Christmas Concert - Friday 28th November
Our Christmas concert is this Friday!
Please remember that this is a school event and it is expected that students are present. For this amazing event, we ask the following;
Children are dropped to the classroom at 6:45pm (no earlier please as we cannot supervise).
Children are dressed in green top/dress and green skirt or plain shorts/pants
Important Information for Year 5’s
Our Year 6 T-shirt size samples will be available in the Green Screen Room from Monday morning and will remain accessible for all of Week 8.
Parents are required to size up their own child and sign the form to confirm their selection.
5/6 Fun Day
Notes will be going out for our fun day next week. We will be going to Salisbury Aquatic Centre on Thursday the 4th of December. Please keep an eye out for it so that permission forms can be returned.
Business Unit:
Thank you to all our students for the incredible effort they have put into their stalls. Their determination and creativity have shone throughout the entire unit. It wasn’t easy, but through trial and error we often learn the most valuable lessons. The purpose of this inquiry is not to create a perfectly polished business, but to give students authentic ownership of their learning as they lead the process with our guidance.
We know this can be challenging to watch as parents, and we sincerely appreciate you stepping back, allowing your children to navigate the struggle, and checking in with classroom teachers when you felt they needed extra support.
This week, students will explore which supports we can purchase for our chosen charity. Together, they have raised an impressive amount of money, and each group will now select items from the Gifts of Grace catalogue to purchase using their profits. What a special opportunity for them to see their hard work directly impacting the lives of others. Their teamwork and perseverance have resulted in an outcome we are truly delighted with.
Current and Upcoming Learning
Reader’s and Writers Workshop: Students will be using Reader’s and Writers Workshop as an opportunity to explore the meaning of Christmas, including the nativity story and its significance. We will also spend time enjoying free-choice reading to continue fostering their love of books and independent reading.
Mathematics: Students have been collecting and graphing their sales data from their business trading. We have also begun our work on BEDMAS, which is supporting our retrieval of the four operations.
Inquiry: ‘Business uses structure to make decisions’.
We are now nearing the end of this unit, and in our final week students will be reflecting on their Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills. They will consider how they communicated, how effectively they collaborated, and how well they managed themselves throughout the inquiry. This reflection is an important part of the learning cycle, helping students recognise their growth, identify strategies that supported their success, and set goals for future learning.
End of Year:
We have several things that are on the calendar for end of year including our Year 5/6 class celebration, move up morning, high school transitions and preparations for our 2026 Year 5/6 classes. We have a busy time ahead and your assistance is valued. Please ensure you are aware of the school calendar dates and commitments.
