Around the Classrooms

Grade 3/4EC

In 3/4EC, we’ve recently started doing fluency pairs during our literacy block. During Brainfood, we sit with a partner and read a shared text on different topics, focusing on four key reading skills: accuracy, fluency, pace, and expression. While one person reads, the other listens carefully, tracks the text with their eyes, and enjoys their Brainfood. Once both students have had a turn reading, they give each other feedback on how they went. It’s been a lot of fun, and by the end of the week, students can really hear how much they’ve improved!

Last week, we also took part in the National Simultaneous Storytime. We listened to the story The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel during a live stream. It was exciting to hear Deborah read her wonderful picture book and answer questions about the story. We also met the illustrator, Danny Snell, who taught us how to draw one of the characters—Tinka the cat!

In PBL, we’ve been focusing on the value of Respect. We’ve learned that respect means treating others the way we want to be treated, and also recognising that everyone, including ourselves, is valuable and important. To put this into practice, we’ve been using the Helping Hands Bingo, which gives us ideas for how we can help others in the classroom and out in the yard. Each time we completed a row on our bingo cards, we earned extra Dojo points as a reward!
