WHOLESCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY St Joseph's School ....... where our students exube sportsmanship and team spirit!
Last Tuesday, with cross country events for all age groups, even the parents, I was so pleased that we were blessed with beautiful sunny weather for the great day held at Sorrento Football Oval (David McFarlan Reserve). It was a day bursting with colour, laughter and physical activity. The main focus of the day was to gather House Points by taking part in your event and in 20-pointer Spirit Awards for demonstrating encouragement, cheering and supporting, putting the needs of others ahead of their own, etc.
Students from Year 3-6 were able to choose from COMPETITION LAPS and PARTICIPATION ONLY LAPS (fewer laps). The competition number of laps entitled them to try out for the St Joseph's Cross Country Team that will compete this Wednesday at Tootgarook Reserve against the best of the other district schools' runners.
Year 5/ 6 students had to run 6 laps (close to 3 km), while Year 3/ 4 students ran 4 laps (approximately 2km). When offered the easier choice virtually every student chose to run the full number of competition laps, which is very pleasing and an indication of the great team spirit and determination of the students at our wonderful school! Year 2 students ran 2 laps, Year 1 students ran 1 lap and Preps ran half a lap, many assisted by their own personal coaches (their Year 6 buddies!) The students from 1st to 8th received ribbons and the first 3 from each race, including Multi-Class events, were presented in front of the whole school on the podium.
A special and sincere thank you from me to our parent helpers (Dean, Matthew, Jemima Germano, Sarsha, Annabel, Kristie, Sophie W & Sophie M, Hope, Kate, Jess, Louise, Bec, Greg, Terry, Chris Pecora (SFNC) as well as anyone I may have forgotten to mention). I could not have run the day without you! I thank the parents too for getting into the team spirit, running the final lap for 20 house points each! This made a difference to the final outcome of the House Team results: It was also a very positive sign of support to see everyone stay until the end to find out the overall House Team Winner for 2025:
1st MAZENOD - 410 points
2nd MANNIX - 377 points
3rd McAULEY - 355 points
4th BUNURONG - 325 points
The first 8 runners to finish from each of the 12/13 year boys and girls, the 11 year old boys and girls and the combined 9/10 year old boys and girls have been sent an Operoo for this week's District Cross Country. Please make sure you have accepted this Operoo by tomorrow.
St Joeys School Running Club - CONTINUES before-school each Tuesday
In preparation for the District, Division and Region level of Cross Country, we continue our Tuesday Running Club sessions for Years 3-6 students from 8.10-8.40am tomorrow. ALL YR 3-6 STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND, not just those who have qualified for the District. We meet at Sorrento Footy Oval each Tuesday morning from 8.10-8.40amfor some running drills and distance training. Please make sure you have completed the Operoo for this if your child is taking part in Running Club and have any asthma or anaphylactic medication with them at the oval. Please ensured that you have SIGNED your child IN before leaving the oval. Mrs O'Shannassy will drive the students back afterwards in ''Bluey'' for those who have selected this option on the Operoo. We still require the help of some parents to prepare the breakfast for our runners back at school. Please let me know if you can help out with this.
Warm Regards,
