Year 9 School of Student Leadership - Community Project Update

On Thursday of Week 4, a group of students from the School for Student Leadership took

part in an inspiring training session with a representative from the Merri Creek Management Committee.

During the session, students learned how to safely conduct a litter clean-up and how to engage in citizen science by collecting data on the types of rubbish found in the environment. They explored where this waste might be coming from within the community and discussed strategies for preventing it from entering our waterways in the future.

The group collected an impressive 20 kilograms of rubbish from Bracken Creek, which

flows directly into Merri Creek, contributing to a healthier local ecosystem. Along the way, they also deepened their understanding of catchments and the historical significance of the area.

This initiative is part of the students’ Community Lead Project, which they will be delivering at Northcote High School. The next step in their journey will involve leading a litter clean-up session with Merri Creek Primary School, sharing their knowledge and passion for environmental stewardship with younger students.

Well done to all involved for their commitment to creating a cleaner, more sustainable community!
