Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships:

Respectful Relationships: Calm Time

This week in Prep Mortlock, students explored different ways to self-calm. They also shared what helps them feel calm in their own lives. We began by discussing things that might make us feel sad, worried, angry, or nervous.

Following this, we tried out two calming strategies to help manage those feelings.

Our first activity was The Listening Game, where students took part in a guided meditation. As you can see in the picture below, everyone looked relaxed — some even looked like they were about to fall asleep!

Next, we tried The Balloon Breathing Game. In this activity, students imagined they were balloons—taking a deep breath to fill up their lungs, holding it, and then releasing it with a big whoosh.

After trying both strategies, we reflected on which one helped our hearts feel slower and our minds feel clearer. The class voted, and The Listening Game was the clear favourite!

Students across the school have voted for our Whole School Rewards for this term. It was great seeing such creative ideas for rewards that students can get excited about reaching. As you can see in the picture below, we are only a couple of pieces of our Level 1 reward already.

The Term 2 Whole School Gugu Rewards they are as follows:

  • Level 1 - A special snack (to be voted on closer to the date, if required)
  • Level 2 - Mega Recess (extended recess breaks EVERY DAY in the last week of term)

In addition to earning whole-school and whole-class rewards for reaching specific milestones, the students in Grades 3-4 have also been enjoying starting to 'spend' the Gugu stickers they have earned on individual rewards, selected from a HUUUUGE menu of rewards that they helped create (see below). Attending a friend's class for a session, playing the Nintendo Switch, sitting on office chairs, playing a song/video for the class, using the 3D printer and lunching with Mr Trezise have all been popular choices.

Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge

Wow! What a fortnight. Well done to those students who have been completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge from home. These students have now read a combined total of 957 books. How awesome is this?!

Keep reading everyone.
