Maths Challenge

Well done to 3/4 Mitchell for winning last fortnight's Maths Challenge!

Please find this fortnight's challenge below:

PGL Camp Campaspe

From the 17th – 19th of September, we will be heading to PGL Camp Campaspe in Tylden for our annual Grade 3/4 camp! This event has already been released on Compass, with payment plans also available.

Medical forms and packing lists will be sent home during parent-teacher interviews at the beginning of Term 3. We will also send out communication regarding parent helpers in the upcoming weeks – so stay tuned!

If you would like to check out any specific information about the camp’s location and facilities, please feel free to check out the link below.

What we are learning...

MATHEMATICS

This fortnight in Maths, we have been exploring two key concepts: volume and probability.

In our volume investigations, students are learning to understand that volume is a measure of how much space an object occupies. They are developing their ability to calculate volume using the correct formulas and apply this understanding in real-world contexts. Students have been engaging in practical tasks such as:

  • Finding and measuring the volume of specific everyday objects (e.g. books, boxes).
  • Identifying items with a volume greater than a given amount (e.g. 48m³).
  • Exploring general volume-based challenges, such as identifying objects we would measure in cubic metres.

Our Fluid Group focus has been on 'time' concepts. We have explored topics including, using calendars, telling time on digital and analogue clocks, making clocks and planning timetables using 12 and 24 hour time formats.

In our probability lessons, students are learning to describe the likelihood of events using a scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). They are learning to estimate and calculate probabilities in both familiar and mathematical contexts. For example:

  • "What is the probability of drawing a red card from a deck of cards?" (½)
  • "What is the chance of rolling a 2 on a standard die?" (1⁄6)
  • "What is the likelihood of it snowing tomorrow?

The Mathematics Learning Task, which will be shared with families shortly, will reflect your child's understanding of this topic.

LITERACY

In Literacy this fortnight, students have been deepening their understanding of sentence structure and how it contributes to meaning and author's voice in a text.

Students have been learning to:

  • Identify simple, compound, and complex sentences within texts.
  • Explain why an author might choose a particular sentence type for effect.
  • Describe how sentence structure can influence the way a character’s voice is expressed and understood by the reader.

A key focus has been on identifying and explaining the difference between independent and dependent clauses, and how they work together to form complex sentences. Students applied this knowledge to our class novel Wonder, writing complex sentences that explored key events or themes.

The Reading Learning Task, which will be shared with families shortly, will reflect your child's understanding of our class novel, Wonder

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

This week in Respectful Relationships, students explored the important concept of trust—what it means to trust someone and how we recognise trust in our relationships.

As part of this learning, students identified the qualities of a trustworthy person and reflected on the people in their own lives whom they trust. They created a personal list of five trusted individuals they would feel comfortable seeking help or support from if needed.

TOPIC

In our Inquiry unit, Someone Else’s Shoes, each student has chosen a specific disability to research and is becoming an "expert" on that topic.

Students are demonstrating great curiosity and care in their investigations, and we’re proud of the thoughtful and respectful approach they are taking in learning about different perspectives and experiences.
