Religious Education

Dear Parents and Families

During the past fortnight we celebrated National Reconciliation Week (NRW) with students, participating in several school and diocesan events.   Grade 3 Maher led a beautiful assembly prayer focusing on the importance of celebrating National Reconciliation Week. Our Grade 3's respectfully shared prayers and reflections highlighting the importance of  this year's theme, Bridging Now to Next, and the ongoing connection between past, present and future generations.

Fr Adi joined us for a special liturgy on Tuesday the 27th May with our senior students.   It was a moving experience with Fr Adi sharing his personal reflections of working in remote outback Western Australia and how he became immersed in the Indigenous Culture during his stay.   Fr Adi also wore a special stole that was made for him and explained the connection to land around the Wangaratta area, a parish where he first worked.

And, last Friday our newly selected FIRE carriers travelled to Benalla with myself and Mrs Salau to participate in the Sandhurst Diocese 'Healing Mass' held at St Joseph's, led by Bishop Shane.   This was a great experience for our students and provided the opportunity to meet other FIRE carriers and make friends from other schools. What a great way to celebrate and understand the importance of National Reconciliation Week.

New FIRE Carriers 2025

After a comprehensive application and interview process, last week our new FIRE carrier leaders were selected.   In the past becoming a FIRE carrier was uniquely for grade 6 students, however this year, we decided it would be a good opportunity for our Grade 5s to apply and begin their leadership journey by becoming a FIRE carrier.   Jess Salau and Ashtyn Atkinson joined me as part of the interview panel.  We were impressed with the effort of all applicants and most importantly for the reasons why many of our grade sixes and grade fives wanted to be a FIRE carrier at St Luke’s.  Students were able to articulate what a FIRE carrier represents and what they would like to do if they were to become a FIRE carrier.   The acronym FIRE stands for Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education.    We look forward to working alongside these very capable young leaders and look forward to what they can achieve.    An official commissioning of our FIRE carriers will take place early in term 3.

Pentecost Sunday 8th June

This Sunday, 8th June, is Pentecost Sunday.   The season of Easter concludes with the feast of Pentecost. On Pentecost we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples who were gathered 50 days after the death of Jesus at Easter. This event marks the beginning of the Catholic Church.

The following video gives a child friendly (and adult friendly) explanation of Pentecost.

Sam Birrell ~ Federal Member of Parliament

Last week the grade 5-6's had a visit from Sam Birrell.   Sam spent a good hour talking to the students about his role as a Federal Member of the National Party representing the Nichols electorate.   Sam spoke fondly of his schooling years and gave good advice of working hard, following your dreams and doing the right thing by others.    Sam's generosity and personable approach with the students won admiration and appreciation from us all.   Our students asked thought provoking questions, which Sam was keen to answer.   Who knows...  we may have aspiring politicians among us!!
