Prayer

"Listen to what the Spirit is saying."

Acknowledgment of Country

We turn our hearts and minds to the people of the Yorta Yorta nation, who have occupied this country for thousands of years.

We pay respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging, and commit to walking alongside Aboriginal Australians in truth and justice.

Pentecost Prayer

'When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.'

Acts Chapter 2 (NIV)

This Sunday, 8th June, is Pentecost Sunday.   The season of Easter concludes with the feast of Pentecost. On Pentecost we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples who were gathered 50 days after the death of Jesus at Easter. This event marks the beginning of the Catholic Church.

The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles. The account in Sunday's readings, recounts how Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples.  After his death, Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to his disciples a helper, who would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world. This helper was the Holy Spirit.

Reflection...

Have you ever thought about what it must have been like to be present on that first Pentecost? The apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit when they had the tongues of fire come to rest on them and immediately began to proclaim what Jesus had taught them. These were the same people who had cowered in fear just a short time before and who were now filled with a courage beyond themselves. And what about the people from various lands who heard them speaking in their own tongues? How did they feel? They couldn’t talk to one another because of their varied languages but they could understand these strange men speaking to them of God.

Reflecting on this first Pentecost, I think that we might be much like both these groupings of people at different times in our lives. Relying on the unconditional love we know God has for us, we may sometimes have the courage to speak out against injustices or on behalf of those in need.

How might you let the Spirit work within you at your workplaces, homes and community?

Prayer to the Risen Christ

Heavenly Father and God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for He is alive and has become the Lord of Life. You raise us with Him and renew your gift of life within us.

Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ and help us to grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Jubilee Prayer ~ Pope Francis

Father in heaven,

may the faith you have given us

in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,

and the flame of charity enkindled

in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,

reawaken in us the blessed hope

for the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us

into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.

May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos

in the sure expectation

of a new heaven and a new earth,

when, with the powers of Evil vanquished,

your glory will shine eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee

reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,

a yearning for the treasures of heaven.

May that same grace spread

the joy and peace of our Redeemer

throughout the earth.

To you our God, eternally blessed,

be glory and praise for ever.

Amen

2025 Diocesean and School Theme

As we anticipate the year ahead, we are all invited along for the journey. No one is left out, left behind or not included. Can you imagine the incredible opportunities that lie ahead? Can you sense how much you will learn, grow and contribute to the lives of others this year?

As pilgrims, we are privileged to walk the same journey as Jesus did thousands of years ago. He brought hope and light to those who others ignored or brushed aside. Jesus took great risks to ground his pilgrimage in God’s love. This became his centre, his guide and his compass. This year, we are all called to journey towards the light that we experience in his presence and God’s promise of equity, justice and compassion.

How can you be a pilgrim who brings hope to others this year?
