Italian Class

We’ve had a very busy term in Italian with students building their vocabulary related to the following topics: - the seasons (winter in particular) 

-learning about the geography of Italy through drawing maps

- and the Grade 5/6’s have been studying, in support of their classroom inquiry, about the different products that are exported into Australia from Italy

Grade Foundation – Have been studying about their body parts, family members and the seasons

Grade 1- The grade 1 students have been using whiteboards to help them consolidate their knowledge of the spelling of their Italian vocabulary words. The whiteboards are great for students ‘having a go’ at a word and then getting support on the correct spelling.

Grade 2 – have been working on their big numbers (up to trenta -30!) and looking at Rome and the Colosseum. They have also been learning about Carnevale. We combined Art and Italian lessons to design beautiful masks.Students paraded their masks at assembly and they all looked fantastic! Scroll across for more photos

Grade 3/4’s – have been learning words to do with weather. They made Fiocco di neve (snowflakes) for display in their workbooks and added winter weather words such as inverno (winter) pioggia  (rain) vento (wind) and freddo (cold) to them. They have been learning about the major cities of Italy and will be learning about travel laws related to visiting Italy. They will be making their own passports and designing their own visa stamps.

Students in the Grade 5/6’s have been mapping the major cities as well as the regions of Italy. They have learnt which cities are pronounced differently in English than Italian. This includes: Firenze (Florence); Venezia (Venice); Napoli (Naples); Milano (Milan); and of course the eternal city Roma (Rome) All students with an Italian heritage have been encouraged to share where their Italian relatives were originally from.

Thanks to those families who have filled in the online form with this information. We have learnt that there are families with a great Italian heritage including relatives who have migrated from: Marsicovotere and Viggiano in the region of Basilcalata; Pescara in Abruzzo; and Siracusa in Sicilia. Thankyou to the Russo and Duca family who shared family memories of cooking regional dishes such as pasta piselli, crispelli and making salami and the Berardone family who were busy in the kitchen as well making pasta sauce, sausages and wine!  If you would like to share your Italian links so that our students can include your original ‘home’ town on their maps please fill in the online form via the link below:

Michael  has family from Platì in Calabria. He recently visited the town and caught up with his relatives.

Term 4 will continue with the celebration of Italian culture with the school holding our special Italian Day event. This will happen on Friday October 16. The day will include some fun cultural activities for all students from F to 6 as well as a special performance called ‘L’ingrediente Segreto’, a Spectacular Spettacolo Production. There will be a note coming home related to this early next term.
