Head of Sport Report

Sporting commitment is an essential aspect of a student's development, fostering teamwork, discipline, and responsibility. Being part of a team requires dedication—not just to training and games but also to effective communication regarding availability.

It is important that students notify the school in advance of any known absences, particularly when they are unable to attend training or matches. Providing early notice allows coaches to make necessary adjustments to team line-ups and training plans, ensuring minimal disruption to the team. It also demonstrates respect for teammates and the effort everyone puts into the sport.

Encouraging a culture of accountability and communication helps maintain the integrity of school sports programs and ensures that students develop habits that will serve them well beyond their sporting commitments.

A big thank you to those who attended games last weekend and put in the extra effort in the absence of others. Your commitment and hard work did not go unnoticed and it was great to see players stepping up to support their team. Your dedication is what keeps our sporting programs strong, and your willingness to adapt and give your best effort is truly appreciated. Well done!

Round 8 – 15th February

Girls Basketball

Firsts

The firsts played an amazing game this week. They played well from the start of the game and were consistent all the way through. Their defence was exceptional and they worked really well as a team. The Redlands tried two different presses against us but we were able to play through both of them. We lost by 4 points in the end but the girls should be so proud of how they played as it was a massive difference from the last time we versed them.

Open C

The Open C’s had a great win against Redlands. They won by 23 points. They played really well as a team and they had good movement on offence. Other than a few minor lapses in concentration their defence was really solid overall. It was a well-deserved win and the team should be proud of their efforts.

Junior A

The Junior A Girls played well but were let down by a few defensive lapses in the second half. The team continues to work incredibly hard during games and have improved their teamwork to a marked extent. The final score of 29-13 in favour of Redlands was not a true indication of the closeness of the game. Zariah, Hannah and Abbey had strong games.

Junior C

The Junior C Girls played their best game of the competition. They played excellent defense to keep the opposition to 8 points but it was in attack that the team excelled. The girls passed the ball with great precision creating numerous baskets from fast breaks and well-timed cuts to the basket. To make the win more meritorious there were only 5 players available for the game. Congratulations to Maggie, Evie, Izzy, Charlotte and Hayley.

Girls Touch Football

Juniors:

The junior touch football girls played at Macquarie University Fields on 15th February. In this game they had no subs but a full team of girls in year 8 and 9. Their gameplay was outstanding considering the heat. In their 40 minute game they had amazing offence with very close tries against Redlands by Natalie De Bruyn and Keitah Altavilla. Their communication and defensive play were all excellent. Chloe Stenberg and Pearl Yatman had amazing defensive skills against the opposition. Overall they lost against Redlands 5-0, but had amazing commitment and determination.

Seniors:

The First Touch girls game was a hard game as the girls only had 6 players, never the less they worked hard and performed well using their skills and communication to keep performing through the match with no subs. The first half was tough going into half time 3-0 down and everyone exhausted from the heat. In the second half the girls dug deep and it resulted in the girls being able to score 2 tries. One from a break through, and one from a quick pass to the wing. The end score was 5-2. Although the girls lost they should be extremely proud of themselves.

Boys Touch Football

Juniors:

Beginning the match was tough as the boys were thinking about the score of their previous match against their very strong Oxley competitors. However, we held out with some excellent line defence and managed to prevent some tries. Great driving and team work allowed us to score a few in the first half. We went on in the second half, keeping odds and evens in mind and narrowly prevented many tries from Oxley. Our attack was faster and our defence stronger as the boys improved, but Oxley took the win …… Well done boys!

Seniors:

The boys all played a very good game against Oxley! We were rewarded with a few subs against their team with none, allowing BMGS to quickly and effectively wear out Oxley’s defences. Xav S started the game strong, allowing us to pull ahead 2-0 in the first few minutes. The team continued to work hard and prevented Oxley from scoring multiple times, however some of their speedy players managed to sneak through some gaps. We pulled it together and stayed ahead of Oxley, winning the match ……. Well done boys!

Round 9 – 22nd February

Girls Basketball

Firsts

The firsts had a tough loss against Oakhill. Oakhill had a lot of experienced players and a lot of very good shooters. But the girls never gave up and continued to try their best and work together as a team.

Open C

The Open C girls had an amazing win against Oakhill. They worked really well as a team. They had great spacing and movement on offence and their defence was really solid. The girls should be really proud of their efforts.

Junior A

The Junior A Girls started slowly in their game against Barker trialing by a significant margin at half time. To the great credit of the girls, they fought back strongly in the second half to get to within 6 points of the lead, eventually losing 30-21. Graciella was back to her best scoring many fine baskets and was well supported by Izzy and Hayley.

Junior C

The Junior C Girls were heavily affected by injury, only able to field four players for the game against St. Spiridon. Against all odds they were still able to come out victorious 15-9. Izzy was tireless in defense and Hannah made many clutch baskets throughout the game. Charlotte and Ruby also had great games.

Girls Touch Football

Juniors:

The Juniors hosted SACS this past weekend. From the start, they were disadvantaged with playing one player short on the field and for a moment only having 4 on the field. Yet despite being disadvantaged from the start, the girls put in so much effort and played the entirety of the game with no complaints. I also want to acknowledge the sportsmanship that the SACS coaches and team displayed. They didn’t have to play with 4 or 5 players, but pulled players off the field to make it a more fairer game for us.

Seniors:

The firsts also hosted SACS this weekend. The girls were caught off guard by some of the pace and touch football skills that the players in the other team had, so we were quickly down 3 - 0, but once the girls settled into the game and took on my feedback, they played as a team, found spaces and created opportunities for them to score. Leading it to be a beautiful competitive game of touch football, where we only went down 6 - 5.
