Visual Art Update

Observational Drawing in Art This Term
It has been a challenging yet rewarding term in Art, as ongoing renovations have meant working in classrooms with limited materials. However, this has provided a wonderful opportunity for Year 1, 2, 3, and 4 students to focus on developing their observational drawing skills.
Each week, students have explored drawing different objects found in and around their classrooms using their brand-new sketchbooks. In addition to everyday items, they have also drawn more unusual objects such as toys, fruits, vegetables, and interesting pieces of crockery like pots and bowls.
Year 3 and 4 students have taken this further by setting up their own still life arrangements, carefully selecting and arranging objects before drawing them. They began by sketching the basic shapes and outlines before adding texture, lines, and shading to create depth and detail. We also explored famous still life artworks for inspiration.
These photos show Year 3 and 4 students working outdoors, drawing a variety of natural and human-made objects found in the garden. Some chose to capture the beauty of the sunflowers in full bloom, while others focused on the wheelbarrow, climbing frame, or greenhouse. Even something as simple as a leaf can become a fascinating subject when observed closely.
While we are excited to return to the Art room, this time spent honing our observation skills and carefully capturing details has greatly enhanced our drawing abilities. We look forward to applying these skills in future projects!
