A message from the Principal

As we head towards the end of our first term, I took some time this week to review our student attendance data so far this year.
Regular school attendance is central to your child's academic success and personal development. Research consistently shows that students with high school attendance are more likely to excel academically, graduate, and enjoy better career opportunities.
Conversely, chronic absenteeism—defined as missing 10% or more of school days—can lead to significant setbacks in learning and social development.
According to studies, students who are chronically absent are at a higher risk of falling behind in core subjects like maths and reading. This gap often widens over time, making it increasingly challenging for them to catch up with their peers. Moreover, chronic absenteeism has been linked to lower lifetime earnings and poorer health outcomes in adulthood.
“ Every day counts and there is no ‘safe’ threshold for absences”
– Hancock et al., 2013
At St Kilda Park Primary School, we are committed to fostering a culture of regular attendance. I'm delighted to share that 124 of our students have maintained 100% attendance so far this year. These students have benefited from every lesson, enhancing the teaching they are receiving in class and increasing the chances of academic success. This week, I had the pleasure of emailing each of their parents to celebrate this outstanding commitment.
However, we also have 41 students whose attendance has fallen below 90%, which is categorised as chronic absenteeism.
This is a significant concern, as it can adversely affect not only their academic progress but also their sense of connection to the school community. In the coming days, I will be reaching out to these families to discuss how we can work together to improve attendance.
We understand that illnesses and unforeseen events can sometimes prevent students from attending school.
However, we request that all parents and carers prioritise regular attendance and do everything possible to minimise these disruptions to school attendance and ensure children arrive on time each day.
Every day counts, and together, we can support our students in reaching their full potential.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
