Middle School -
Year 9 and 10
We are thrilled to share the fantastic start our Middle School students have had this term at KWRSC. It’s been awesome to see our students engage positively and navigate the changes that come with a new academic year, from adjusting to the new Middle school location and lockers to endeavouring to be fully prepared in their uniforms and ready to learn.
The School-Wide Positive Behaviour framework has been implemented to support and ensure a calm and orderly learning environment. Our middle school students have adopted these practices and enthusiastically embraced the opportunities within their Pathways subjects, developing valuable skills and gaining a deeper understanding of their future potential.
With NAPLAN now completed, we look forward to the release of the data to help support student growth. This will help us identify strengths and areas for growth, allowing us to refine our teaching and explicit learning experiences to support every student. By analysing the results in detail, we can determine which concepts need further reinforcement and how best to tailor our teaching to ensure the strongest possible outcomes.
Next term, our Year 9 City camp heads off, and we look forward to our students having a fantastic experience. A huge thank you to the year 9 team in the development of the city camp, their leadership ensured the students will have an engaging and memorable time. I can’t stress enough that experiences like these provide students with opportunities to build resilience, teamwork, and independence all skills that will serve them well in the years ahead. If you have not signed up yet, please do.
Parent Teacher conferences will have opened for bookings early next term. We encourage all parents to come along with your child, to meet with teachers to discuss progress so far and strategies for further growth.
I couldn’t be prouder of how our students have participated in the opportunities offered this term. Keep up the great work Middle School, as we appreciate your continued efforts.
I look forward to a strong finish to Term 1 and a deep dive into engaging in Term 2.
Todd Slater
Assistant Principal
Term 1 has been a busy time for the Year 9 students of 2025 as they have settled well into their place within the Middle School.
Students have completed NAPLAN for their last time, demonstrating behaviours in line with the high expectations we have come to expect from our students.
Year 9 Science students have engaged in numerous hands on learning opportunities including the Pizza Day helped them gain an understanding of thermodynamics. Students also engaged with a bull's eye dissection in their studies relating to light and the electromagnetic spectrum.
Term 2 promises to be another exciting and full Term with Year 9 camp in week 3 from 7th-9th of May. Camp for our Year 9's includes 3 days in Melbourne experiencing the wonders our city has to offer. Further to this, the students will engage in an incursion called ToonSchool. This supports students in developing a growth mindset.
In Term 2, students will also be a part of the South East Careers Expo through the Careers and Pathways program. This is a great opportunity for Year 9 students to begin thinking about what they would like to do as they move towards a senior education pathway and their pathway beyond school.
Ben Verbi - Year 9 Learning Community Leader
It’s been a busy and rewarding Term 1 for Year 10 as we have settled into the new Middle School building and focused on our core value of connection, building relationships between the Year 10 Learning Community Team, classroom teachers and students.
Our new Vocational Pathways Program has proved popular and given students opportunities to engage in a variety of Applied Learning activities. Students have been enjoying and showing growth in practical experiments in Applied Science and have been building important employment skills through the Ready to Work program. RTW students have been working on a project at KWRPS every Thursday morning this month, forging strong links with our community and gaining important practical workplace skills.
Year 10 students in General and Advanced Year 10 subjects are also engaging in their learning and being supported to develop strong learning behaviours to achieve success in Year 10 and prepare them for Senior pathways. Students are encouraged to create a regular home study routine to ensure that they manage the workload of Year 10 successfully and prepare for examinations which will occur in June and November. Students who need additional assistance with this are encouraged to speak to their teachers or the Learning Community Team who can provide advice and guidance to maximise their learning opportunities.
The Year 10 Outdoor & Environmental Studies class experienced a Coastal excursion on Monday 31st March and were excited to put into practice their learning from this term.
Many of our Year 10 students are also studying an accelerated VCE program and have embraced the challenges this provides. Students studying a VCE subject are welcome to request a quiet space in the Middle School building at breaktimes if they wish to study during recess or lunch or before or after school. Students wishing to access this should check in with the Learning Community Leader or Co-ordinator.
Year 10 students are looking forward to the upcoming Work Experience week in Term 2 which will run from Monday 19th May to Friday 23rd May. Students have participated in information sessions about Work Experience and are expected to be active and engaged in finding a placement which will give them insight into their future career pathway. All information and required documentation can also be found in the Year 10 Students Team in the designated Work Experience channel. We would encourage students to return their Work Experience Arrangement forms as soon as possible (preferably by the end of Term 1 or by Week 1 of Term 2). Our hardworking Careers staff are available to address student enquiries in the Careers office in the Middle School Building and regularly update the Careers channel of the Year 10 Student Team with exciting career and education opportunities. All Year 10 students will have the opportunity to attend the South East Careers Expo next term, so please ensure that permission is granted for this event on Compass so that they don’t miss the excursion.
We hope that all students and their families have a safe and restful break over the holidays and look forward to a great Term 2 with Year 10. Please do not hesitate to contact the Year 10 Learning Community Team if you have any questions, concerns or information that you would like to share with us.
