Year 11 and 12 Plant Production - Kateland Jury
The term has started well for all students studying Plant Production this year. For both year levels, the focus to start with was Plant Structure and Function, covering all the essentials of how plants grow and the importance they play in life for all. To go along with this, the students have also planted some sunflowers in pots as part of the University of Queensland (UQ) Sunflower Competition. The competition looks at growing the heaviest sunflower seed head and teaches students about some of the factors that can influence plant growth and production.
In Year 11, the students are now working through the Plant Breeding and Improvement content. In this unit, the task is for students to develop their own farm and choose crops that they plan to grow in the upcoming season. They need to justify their decisions by looking at yield and trial data and any other information that might make some varieties stand out in their chosen AgZone compared to others.
In Year 12, the focus is now on Plant Environment and looking at the things needed for optimal plant growth and what factors can limit growth. Each student has chosen a deficiency that can affect a plant of their choice and is creating a field day brochure on how to manage it.
